Hi Friends. I know I have talked to some of you about my dear Hanna du Plessis. She is my son’s partner, and the daughter I never had. I’m including a video she posted a few months ago so you can have a sense of who she is. Hanna’s ALS is why I’m asking for your continued help. If you watched the video, you saw a brilliant, accomplished young woman. Since 2011, she and a friend have been partners in a small firm called Fit Associates—a “make-a-difference-firm” (fitassociates.com). Hanna’s work through Fit was greatly influenced by her experiences growing up in her native South Africa. She saw oppression and trauma embedded in the society there and in the US, and at the same joined a blossoming movement of people working for an equitable world for everyone. ALS has slowed and changed that drive to excel. While she benefits from devices that assist her speech and breathing, it is harder for Hanna to speak clearly and she has to monitor her energy carefully. Hanna is no longer able to work, and therefore no longer has an income. Her community of friends and supporters have contributed, taking care of her everyday needs with concern and commitment to her. Thanks to your generosity, Hanna was able to make a trip back to South Africa this past summer of 2024. It would be her last chance to be there with her partner and his two children while she could still walk with assistance and talk with a voice box assist device. Her time there was so important for them, for her, and for her parents, aunts and uncles, cousins and circle of friends in South Africa. I am writing to ask for your continued help. With no income, an uncertain future battling this disease, and the stress of lack of full coverage insurance, Hanna has a financial burden by which even completely able-bodied people would be crushed. Please share the GFM. If you know of any support organizations that could help, please reach out to them. Hanna has worked throughout her adult life trying to make a difference in the lives of those who were struggling. Let’s pay it forward now. Thank you!
