Our name is Maya & Mia and we'd like to share our story. Maya and I were just 6 months old when our lives drastically changed. When we were born we would not cry, move or act like normal babies but our parents did not know that we suffered from an illness called SMA.After a couple of weeks in the hospital we were about to get discharged, but that same night Maya's right lung collapsed and got rushed to the ICU to get intubated. The following day I was also taken to the ICU as a precaution but the week after that I too got intubated for the same reason, the doctors did not know what was wrong with us but one day a genetic specialist came in to our room and told Mom & Dad that she thought she knew what was wrong with us and sadly she was right, then we were diagnosed with SMA type one as of now that is the worst type that there is.. Mom & Dad had to make the hardest decision of their lives to either fight along with us and fight every single day for our survival or cut their losses, give up on us and let us go. Of course they chose to fight with us and we are here today writing our storyMia y Maya son gemelas idénticas cuando nacieron todo parecía normal, cuando cumplieron un mes después de nacer su pediatra noto que sus músculos eran muy flácidos y recomendó diferentes tipos de terapia y las diagnosticaron con Hypotonia (tono muscular bajo) con el tiempo fueron empeorando hasta aspirar su propia formula y causar colapso en sus pulmones debido a una fuerte neumonía que las mantuvo hospitalizadas por siete meses. Durante esos siete meses pasaran muchas cosas difíciles de explicar,ahora Maya y Mia tienen 2 años de edad y padecen una condición que por el momento no tienen cura .Atrofia muscular espinal SMA(Spinal muscular Atrophy) esta enfermedad les impide moverse, respirar por si mismas y comer. Por lo cual están conectada las 24 horas a un ventilador, tienen un tubo gástrico para ser alimentada, necesitan tratamientos respiratorios varias veces al día y medicamentos que les ayudan a mantener sus pulmones limpios. Una simple gripa o virus las afecta mucho. Pero esto es parte de su condición,ellas necesitan muchos cuidados y estamos luchando día a día para darles una vida lo mas normal posible dentro de nuestras posibilidad. Nos gustaría poder tener un medio de trasporte adaptado para ella o un hogar mejor acondicionado para sus necesidades.A Pesar de todo lo difícil que pueda parecer Maya y Mia son lo mas hermoso que nos a pasado.
