This past week my husband Collin Schwartz almost died….and it all started with a sinus infection. He traveled to Ravello, Italy where he was going for a “quick trip” to be a groomsmen in one of his friends wedding. He wasn’t feeling great shortly before. He had what felt like a sinus infection and got wrongly prescribed medication before he left. The pressure of the airplane caused the sinus infection to become so inflamed that by the time he got to Italy he was starting to become disoriented and incoherent. Collin went to get over the counter sinus medication and again was so disoriented that he winded up overdosing on this medication causing his entire body to start shutting down including his liver, kidneys, white blood cell count, and more. He had a fever through the roof and he couldn’t physically speak, and a suspected seizure. Thankfully, a friend named Nate who is a police officer brought him to the emergency room in Ravello, to then where he was transferred to the Ospedali riuniti San Giovanni di Dio e Ruggi d'Aragona in Salerno, Italy where he ultimately went into a coma, and they discovered that he had fluid in his brain as well as a subdermal empyema. I got news of this by the groom shortly after. It took me hours to find Collin, speak to a doctor with help from a close friends mom who speaks Italian, and I then knew it was time to get there ASAP. My father in law and I jumped on the first plane we could and off we went to save Collin. When I first saw my husband he did not know who I was…until he did. He was incoherent, couldn’t speak, and I was terrified that this was the end…honestly I have to admit. BUT…I knew and KNOW that he is one of the strongest, smartest, most will powered human there ever is and I KNEW he would come out on the other side. He has been treated with a very aggressive course of antibiotics, steroids, anti seizure cocktail that has brought down the inflammation, swelling, and has brought my husband back to me and my children. And next week, after two weeks away…we are coming home. I cannot thank the INCREDIBLE DOCTORS AND NURSES at this hospital enough as they literally SAVED HIS LIFE. I can give them all of the love possible but I WANT TO GIVE BACK. They have been so cautious, all hands on deck, and everyone has been rooting for Collin. They welcomed me and my father in law with open arms, with hugs, with kisses, with support even though many of them do not speak a word of English. They have SAVED my husband and our entire family from something that very well could’ve taken a very dark turn. Collin has some way to a full recovery, I mean we are only a week out, but I know he will get there 110%. Let’s focus on getting him home first! I would so appreciate anything that you are willing to give to support Collin and this amazing place that has quite literally saved his life and as always there is no donation too small. I love you all so much. You have been a major part of our support system whether you know it or not, whether we know each other personally or not. So thank you TRULY from the bottom of our hearts. ❤️❤️❤️
