She is an 11-year-old girl who is very brave, caring and sweet, and loves to study, sing and do lots of crafts. She suffers from a condition that causes benign tumors to grow along nerves causing a range of symptoms. She developed severe scoliosis in 2024 that caused 7 vertebrae to break and required eight major surgeries to stabilize her spine. Unfortunately one of the rods in her back has detached itself from the structure and requires another operation to fix. Although she has gone through a lot of pain and surgeries over the last few years, we are in awe of Gildita's determination and maturity. She is very hopeful that she will run, play outdoors and dance again. We are opening this fund because her insurance company has labeled the scoliosis a secondary condition. Because of this classification, the benefits available to her have been exhausted, therefore we need help to secure the necessary funds for her operation, which needs to be done, as soon as possible. Up to this point, Gildita has undergone eight surgeries, including two major ones to stabilize her spine. The new operation required to replace the broken rod in her back costs approximately US$173,000, if all goes well, with additional costs for post-operative care and physical therapy. Our goal is to raise US$200,000 to cover these costs. Gildita’s condition has marked our lives with challenge, but also resilience and hope. Despite this difficult situation, our family has never ceased to marvel at her spirit and courage. She has tackled every obstacle with incredible strength and has taught us to be grateful for all we have. Her journey has not been easy. Gildita required resuscitation at birth, and at the age of five was diagnosed with gliomas in both her eyes, as well as benign tumors in her brain. Miraculously, despite initially losing 50% of her eyesight, she later gained it back. In 2024, she suffered fractures in seven vertebrae due to scoliosis which rapidly progressed from 12 degrees to 49 degrees in just four months. As a result, she had to undergo several back operations and wear a brace. Today, Gildita has rods in her back starting at T10 hooked into her vertebrae, creating a "bridge" over her lumbar and sacral areas, stabilizing her new spine onto her hips. After a tough recovery period marked by complications, including a bacterial infection, she was finally able to walk again, and be free of her wheelchair. However, we have recently learned that one rod has broken due to a failure to fuse with the bone, and we now face another surgery.
