Hi my name is Don Roberts, and asking for help is a difficult decision for me, as I have never been in this position. Almost 10 years ago I was diagnosed with Sarcoidosis. The disease changed my life by attacking my heart, liver, joints and eyes. Within a year I was in I was unable to work or drive. I was fortunate that I was approved for disability, but it certainly altered our lives. Three years ago my wife and I moved to Virginia to help take care of my Mom and Dad. During the move, I fell backwards out of the truck and destroyed my left knee. The Covid pandemic had just begun and no one would do surgery as it was classified as elective. I became housebound and bed ridden for almost a year. During this time I lost the ability to walk, and developed a bone infection. I had nine surgeries during the next six months, culminating in the amputation of my left leg above the knee. My right knee had been injured during the original fall, but had been overlooked. I went through months of physical and occupational therapy only to learn that I was not going to walk again, as my right leg was beyond repair. I have been in a wheelchair ever since. Today I was informed that I have been approved for a new chair with a cushion that will help me avoid pressure sores, and make getting around much easier. Jennifer had to quit her job in order to stay home and care for me. With my disability being our only source of income, we have exhausted our savings, thus my request for help. Our share of the new chair is $2,800. We have to pay that in full prior to delivery. This chair will change our lives, and give me back some independence and improve my mobility. I assure you that I wouldn’t be asking for assistance if it wasn’t truly necessary. Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated and I assure you that not a penny will go to waste. Thank you in advance for your consideration in assisting me to get moving again. God Bless each of you.
