Due to Alexis' extensive injuries as a result of shaking, there is no life insurance in place to help her family with funeral expenses. This LFEBridge page is to raise those funds. Thank you in advance for any help!https://www.facebook.com/AlexisMaeSBSsurvivor -----Alexis was born a healthy baby in October 2010. Unfortunately, she began being abused by those who were supposed to love and protect her the most shortly after arriving home. She had multiple trips to the emergency room for injuries including bite marks and bleeding from her ears, but hospital staff and pediatrician continued to send her back home with her biological mother. On 10/28/2010 at only 2 weeks old, Alexis' life would be forever changed. She was once again taken back to the hospital. This time she would not be sent home with the one hurting her. Instead she is admitted with bruising to her right forearm, right upper arm, right shoulder, and a scratch to her left cheek. She is malnourished, severely dehydrated, and is having seizure activity (status epilepticus) with posturing. She was immediately intubated due to declining respiratory condition. Due to extensive swelling, her brain shifted 5.5 mm within her skull. She had intraparenchymal, subarachnoid, and subdural hemorrhages within her brain. Opthalmology exam shows 4 retinal hemorrhages "consistent with shear injury from shaking." A subsequent MRI two days later shows that her injury is so severe the physicians state only her brainstem remained intact. Physicians report "Severe encephalopathy. Does not blink or wince to bright lights in eyes. No EEG activity when pinched and movements appear reflexive rather than voluntary. Poor neurologic prognosis, with little chance for a good/meaningful neurologic recovery." On 11/1/2010 the hospital's ethic committee recommended removal of Alexis from life support and a transition to palliative care. The hospital petitioned the court with their medical recommendations. Thankfully for Alexis she was assigned a public defender who met her and believed in the worth of saving her life! Two separate times the court was petitioned only to have requests for palliative care denied! Alexis' code status was provisionally changed to full code and she continued to receive all medically necessary interventions. Against the doctors expectations, Alexis was able to be extubated and began breathing on her own! She was discharged to a medically fragile foster home 6 weeks after entering the hospital. Follow up MRI showed extensive areas of liquefaction of her brain. Her brainstem and cerebellum were spared from the devastation of her injuries. Her condition has unfortunately been declining over the past 4 months. She is requiring more oxygen while asleep to maintain her oxygen levels in her body. She was diagnosed with pulmonary edema in July. She was admitted to the PICU in September with hypothermia and hypoxia. The day before her 5th birthday a referral was made to hospice care for my sweet little girl. Her brain is so damaged that as her body is growing bigger, her brain is no longer able to regulate even her basic body function (heart rate, respirations, temperature). On Friday, October 23, 2015, I met with hospice and officially changed my little girl's code status to DNR and signed the ppaperwork to make her an official hospice patient. This was definitely the hardest decision I have ever had to make. I want to make sure that my little girl is comfortable and loved. Unfortunately the abuse she suffered at 2 weeks old was too severe. Finally there is no more we can do to "fix" what is happening to her body as a result. As her mom, I am very angry that her biological mother continues to live a normal life as my precious girl is dying solely because of her actions.
