Dear community, I am writing to you all to let you know about the unexpected loss of a wonderful woman and her family’s need for community now more than ever. The Smith family experienced an immense loss last week when their daughter, Alexandria, was found dead by her younger brother, Nathaniel. This was a sudden and extremely devastating blow to a family that has already persisted through incredible grief and loss. Alex was a loving daughter to Tammy, a sister to Nathaniel, David, the late Delkatrian, and Tish, and a mother. She leaves behind three precious young daughters – Christina (7), Catrina (5), and Ci’yannah (2), who will undoubtedly feel the void of her absence more than anyone as they grow up without their mother’s presence. As a close friend of the family who has known them for many years and served in community building with an incredible young person like Nathaniel, I can attest to how this family has always been an example of community. They extend welcoming, warmth and support to those around them - regardless of the circumstances and with no questions asked. As such, I am earnestly asking our communities to extend the same warmth to them as they have given to the world without expectation. Let us work together to lighten the financial burden caused by this loss and create more space for this family to focus on their grief. All funds obtained from these donations will be directly sent to Alex’s mother Tammy and her brother Nathaniel, and will be used for funeral costs as well as for other costs incurred for Alex’s beloved daughters following her passing.
