On May 31st, 2024, Finn experienced a mental health crisis that resulted in a 30-hour boarding in the ER along with a week-long stay at an adolescent psychiatric unit and a partial hospitalization placement. We learned that he had been experiencing scary psychiatric symptoms but that he had been masking them and trying to deal with them all on his own. His doctors, though very good, have been unable to determine the source of his experiences and have suggested he undergo neuropsychological testing. Neuropsychological testing will help us determine many things about Finn, from his intellectual abilities to executive and emotional functioning. In truth, Finn should have had this testing at a younger age but because the symptoms he displayed to us were not harmful, we felt it was best to allow him to continue to grow. Had we known that he was masking such deep discomfort and despair, we would have pursued testing much sooner. That said, neuropsychological testing is not typically covered by medical insurance (at least not in full) and it is costly. The range in Massachusetts is $2,000-$7,000. Unfortunately, as a family, we are overextended financially. We signed contracts for much-needed home repairs in the 12k range and we simply do not have cash on hand to cover these costs. Ordinarily, for my birthday, I raise funds for a charity so this year is a little different. I am asking for assistance to help my son discover the ins and outs of his mind so that he might find some peace and be able to grow into the healthy, happy adult he deserves and is meant to be. We are hoping that our insurance will cover some of the costs and of course, we intend to pay into it as well. We have a few months to raise the money because neuropsychological testing has a backlog of cases. Any money that we do not use will be donated to the Trevor Project. Thank you for reading our story, making donations, and sharing with your friends. We will give updates when we have positive news to share!
