This is my daughter Jessica Mulkey, she was born with Spina Bifida. She is an amazing 42 year old that is used to living independently in an assisted care facility. She is currently facing a challenging situation. In 2016 she developed a severe infection in her right leg and had to undergo an amputation below her right knee. Until that point in her life, she has always used crutches and regular wheelchairs for mobility. After her procedure she started using a power assisted wheelchair as she no longer has the enough arm strength to help her up and down ramps or over door jambs and other minor obstacles. Her power assist wheelchair, which is vital for her daily life, needs crucial repairs. The purpose of our fundraising efforts is to gather enough funds to ensure the repair of Jessica's wheelchair. Two years ago, she resided in an assisted living facility that, unfortunately, had to undergo a three-day emergency closure. As a result, all residents, including Jessica, were scattered across different locations such as Devine, Kerrville, and long-term care homes. Jessica and I made the decision to go into long-term care to remain close to her home here in San Antonio as there were no assisted living facilities here in San Antonio that would take anyone under 55. She has grown fond of the staff, enjoys the activities provided, she has some long family there and she is very happy. Jessica is seen as an invaluable asset to the residence. However, with this change in living arrangements came alterations in insurance coverage. Medicaid, which previously covered the cost of her specialized wheelchair, no longer covers the cost of repairs. I have been picking up cost of some items but am unable to cover all. This leaves Jessica in a difficult predicament, as her wheelchair plays an essential role in her daily life. The price of purchasing a new wheelchair amounts to $8000.00, which is a considerable financial burden. National Seating and Mobility has been working with me on pricing on just the items that will make her chair work just like new and safer for her. Thankfully, the cost to repair the wheelchair's wheels, where the motor is located, is significantly less, totaling at under $3000.00. Please share and any donation is appreciated. Thank you so much.
