My name is Beverly Cook and I'm overjoyed to celebrate my 87th birthday this month! Many of my friends and family have asked: Bev, what do you want for your birthday this year? While I thank God for my good health, my right mind and my good fortune, there is one thing that I would greatly appreciate for my 87th birthday this year. What I ask of those who are willing or able, is a contribution to the Victim Impact Fund that I have established for my grandson, Famiek Cook. As many of you know, my grandson is near and dear to my heart. In 2024, right before he graduated from Wartburg College, Famiek's mother was shot and killed . Last month, the man who murdered my grandson’s mother was found guilty by a jury . This month is the sentencing hearing where my grandson will give a victim impact statement about how losing his mother, has impacted him. From missed track meets, birthdays and college graduation to missing the births of his children, my grandson has felt the effects of his mother’s absence. Famiek’s Victim Impact Fund will help with trial-related expenses such as counseling, lost wages, and other expenses associated with attending the legal proceedings, including the upcoming sentencing hearing. To my beloved grandson: I, too, lost my mother during a time that I needed her most. The place of true healing is a fierce place. It’s a giant place. It’s a place of monstrous beauty and endless dark and glimmering light. And you have to work really, really, really hard to get there, but you can do it. With Love, BC
