Northern Medical Ultrasound are raising money for a local family to help ease the pressure following their daughter, Esmie's, brain tumour diagnosis. Esmie's grandma Gill works with us at NMU, she is an asset to the team and a great friend to all so we would like to help the family as much as we can. On the 12th August we are part taking in a 10 mile pub walk, and any funds raised will go to the family. Please see below a short story Connor and Sophie have put together to explain Esmie's ongoing journey.... 'On Sunday 29th May 2024 our world shattered our Daughter Esmié who was 3 months old at the time was taken to A&E at Royal Blackburn Hospital where we expressed our concerns about her vision as she couldn’t follow objects, was always looking down or to the side, her head size had dramatically increased in the past couple of weeks and we had not had a social smile. From this and a few other tests they sent her for a CT scan, when we got the results of the scan It showed that she had Hydrocephalus (water on the brain) we were then told that she had a mass which was causing this but couldn’t confirm straight away as it had been sent to the Specialist Doctors at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital and were told that we would be going there that night. Esmié was taken via Ambulance to Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital where she had an MRI scan which confirmed that she had Hydrocephalus and a Large Brain Tumour and was put straight onto the HDU ward (High Dependency Unit). She had her first surgery on Tuesday 30th May to try and remove as much of the tumour that they could but because her tumour was so vascular they had to stop surgery after 6 hours as she had a few complications during surgery and had to have a lot of blood products used and blood transfusions. She was then taken to ICU and put on a ventilator. They also fitted an EVD (External Ventricular Drain) which drains her cerebral spinal fluid to relive the pressure on her brain. On Thursday 1st June Esmié had her second surgery which lasted 9 hours where they removed more of the tumour but again a lot of blood products and blood transfusions were needed which unfortunately then led to her having a DVT (deep vein thrombosis) in her leg which prevented further surgeries until this had been treated with blood thinners which gave her 6 weeks of recovery. On 3rd June she was taken off the ventilator and was woken up on ICU and she was then monitored for a further few days on HDU before being brought onto the Neurological Ward where she would recover until her next surgeries. She was Diagnosed on 7th June with an Immature Teratoma Tumour which is a Tumour that sits between the Benign and Malignant because of this it means all the Tumour will need to be removed. She will have to visit the Christies Hospital in Manchester every three months for regular checks and scans to prevent it coming back. She is scheduled in to have at least another two surgeries to remove the rest of the brain tumour on the 25th and 28th July from that there will also be recovery time and they may have to fit a shunt' Please dig deep and help us raise as much as we can. Thank you, Nmultrasound.
