On Tuesday (7/18) Evan was brought to Memorial Hospital in Carbondale, IL in a state of severe diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and in extremely critical condition. (For our medical friends out there his blood pH was 6.89 when he arrived. He was very sick, and the paramedics got to him just in time.) Prior to this happening, Evan was diagnosed with cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome, and despite abstaining after learning this, a rebound of severe repeated vomiting combined with an untimely failure of his insulin pump led to a very dangerous situation. When his medical team first spoke to us in the ER, we were told to expect the worst. The worst did not happen. The medical staff were able to stabilize him enough to transfer him to the ICU. He was still in critical condition, on kidney dialysis, and intubated, but against all odds, Evan survived. Over the next several days Evan slowly began to regain consciousness. He was able to be weaned off his breathing tube, his kidney function rebounded, and his blood chemistry started to normalize. As of 7/23, he has been stepped down from ICU and the recovery phase has now begun. Evan is expected to make a full recovery, but it is going to be a slow one. He is the primary earner in our family, but he is not yet eligible for short-term disability or paid leave through his employer. I have been steadily interviewing for positions recently, but best case scenario at the moment is no increase in income on my end until the middle of August. It is unknown at this time when Evan will be cleared to return to his job. In light of that, I am reaching out to establish a recovery fund for Evan so he can worry about getting well instead of worrying about paying bills for a bit. I'll be working with the hospital to manage his medical bills, but there will likely still be copays, out-of-pocket expenses, transportation costs, living costs, and many, many missed hours at his work. My own work hours will likely take a hit as well while I manage his transition into outpatient care. If you have the ability to do so comfortably, please consider contributing to Evan's recovery fund. We live very modestly already, but every bill paid on time the next month will be one less stress on Evan while his body and mind are working overtime to heal. Thank you all.
