On 7th July 2024 my granddaughter was diagnosed with Retinoblastoma (an uncommon eye cancer that usually affects children under 5, although it can affect children of any age). My daughter Elise and her partner Callum, were devastated, It was so hard to accept, as the only signs they noticed on the Tuesday before diagnosis was that her iris was darker then it normally was & her pupil was cloudy and white in certain lights. Elise looked back on pictures and her right eye showed a white pupil and her left was red when the flash was on. These are signs of Retinoblastoma. Esmae was referred urgently to the eye hospital on Wednesday evening and was diagnosed on the Friday by the BCH. The consultant advised the only way to make sure Esmae was safe was to remove her right eye as the tumour was graded as a Grade E tumour (the worse possible grading) and there was no way of saving the eye as she had no vision due to the tumour being so big, again Elise and Callum were devastated. Esmae had to have an urgent MRI scan to make sure the cancer hadn’t spread anywhere else. We had the news on the following Friday the week after she was diagnosed, that she did not need chemotherapy due to it not spreading anywhere else, Elise and Callum were so relieved and we're ready for what’s to come next. The following Tuesday, 10 days after her diagnosis she had her enucleation (eye removed) at the BCH. She will now have a prosthetic eye for the rest of her life due to this horrible rare disease! Esmae has also had to undergo surgery to remove and freeze her ovary so she can have the option of having children when she is older, this operation was on the 31st August. Esmae will have to have 6 rounds of intensive chemotherapy due to the cancer spreading in her optic nerve starting 7th August until December. Such a lot for a 3 year old to go through but she's a fighter and hasn't complained at all. We would like to raise funds to take Esmae on a magical trip to Disneyworld Paris to see her favourite Princess, Rapunzel when her treatment ends and to give Ellie and Callum some financial stability so they can concentrate on Esmae 100%. Thank you ❤️
