My sister-in-law Emily Pelletier Skiles was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. Emily had a double mastectomy in June and has been out of work recovering as she waits for more news about her diagnosis and treatment plan. She is hopeful that she'll be able to have reconstructive surgery later this year but anticipates the timeline may be interrupted due to additional surgery and chemotherapy. The thing about a new cancer diagnosis is that in addition to turning your entire world upside down, you have to face an unknown number of variables about your finances. Even with a "good job" and "good insurance" the financial burden is overwhelming. I'm setting this fund up to help to ease some of the pressure that her family is experiencing through this difficult time. Let me back and up and explain how Emily became my sister-in-law... Several years ago I took a job in a pediatric emergency department. Emily, an experienced PICU and Emergency Pediatric RN, quickly became my work "person". She was my mentor, cheerleader, and confidante. Emily was a patient teacher and coach, through my entire first terrifying year in pediatrics, and I believe I'm a much better nurse because of her guidance. But it wasn't all serious life-saving work that drew us together... one day over lunch she was lamenting her recent dating experiences and how much she "just wanted to meet a nice guy". It occurred to me that my recently divorced brother-in-law was also in this same predicament. I love Rob Skiles for many reasons... he's a funny, lovable, goofball and he's the kind of guy that's been showing up unannounced at my door with munchkins "for the kids" for years. Rob was pretty rusty in the dating arena. He needed a nice girl to go out on a date with him so he could ease back in and remember how to act on a date. Knowing Emily to be a kind-hearted person, I guessed she wouldn't cringe too hard at his jokes, and maybe it would give him a little confidence. Folks...they hit it off & it was a love match. Now they're married and live down my street with their beautiful blended family. Emily and I now work in a new hospital, and though our paths cross less often at work, she's only a call or a text away when I need her expertise. In addition to being a skilled RN, Emily has served the Old Saybrook community through her outstanding work in theater set and costume design for the OSMS spring musical and several productions in a local community children's theater in Clinton. She has given countless hours of her time to make sure every single child walks across the stage looking amazing so they can bring their very best to the performance. Several family, friends & coworkers have reached out to help with meals, and have also asked if there's anything else they can do to help. This fund will be for medical expenses including hospital bills, medication, transportation to appointments, and co-payments. Thank you for taking the time to read our story and thank you for your generosity.
