Hi! My name is Emmet, and I'm a 27-year-old transgender man living in Tennessee. I have been medically transitioning for 4 years now, and i have had 3 major goals: hormones, a legal name change, and top surgery. The first two are finished, so now for the third! I am scheduled for surgery on June 20th, 2024, and I will be out of work for about 5 weeks for recovery. My employer does not offer paid medical leave, so I will be taking FMLA. This means I get go keep my job, but I won’t be getting paid for a little while. I have been saving up as much as possible for the past few years, but I still need some help. I spoke to the hospital and my insurance about financing, and I should owe around $5,000. In addition I will need around another $1,500 to pay my bills and rent while I am out of work and also have a little wiggle room in case of any emergencies. I have set the goal higher than what I estimate I will need in order to account for unforeseen circumstances, because lord knows life is full of little surprises and I don’t want to have to deal with that while I can’t even lift anything. This surgery is something that I have been aspiring toward for almost ten years now, and I am eager to get started on this next chapter and becoming more comfortable in my skin.
