Hello family, friends and community members! For those who don’t already know me, my name is D’Angelo Legend Adjokatcher and I’d love to share more about my family and I. So, I’ll start with me. We don’t have to be so formal, please, my friends call me DD. I was born on March 21, 2024, my birthday! Coincidentally, that’s the same day I met my super amazing parents, Twinkle and Adam (I’ll just call them mom and dad for short), and my big sister Teresa, who’s the coolest tween I know. I was only a month old when I was diagnosed with something called X-LINKED SCID. Trust me, I hadn’t heard of it before that day either. Basically, it’s a very rare, life-threatening condition that causes me to have a very weak immune system which makes me prone to persistent infections. The doctors told us the best treatment option for my condition was a Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT). On July 12, 2024 I had my first Bone Marrow Transplant. My mom was my donor. Not to brag or anything, but she’s kind of a superhero. The good news is that the transplant was initially a success! The bad news is that after the transplant I developed something called Graft vs. Host Disease (GvHD). Which means my body recognized my moms donated cells as a threat and started attacking them. My doctors did everything they could to make the first BMT work, but every time they tried to take me off of steroids, my body would attack again. This affected my skin and my tummy, and severely affected my liver. Post-transplant I was on several medications, mainly immunosuppressants and IVIg therapy. My doctors decided to seek help from different doctors across the U.S regarding my condition. After A LOT of testing, they tried to cure it with chemotherapy and more medications. Sadly, none of the treatments worked. My doctors told us that I would need another Bone Marrow Transplant. On June 1st, 2024, I travelled from CHEO hospital in my hometown Ottawa, to Sainte Justine hospital in Montreal. Since I’ve been here, I’ve been busy getting my body ready for my second BMT on July 28th. Which means 9 days of chemotherapy before the big day… yuk! My donor will be my dad this time. Not to brag twice BUT my dad is a superhero, too! My doctors tell me it could be about 3 months before we start seeing any results. My entire life has consisted of hospitalizations and isolation. If all goes well with the second BMT, I wouldn’t have to spend my life in hospitals anymore. It’s going to be so much fun when I can finally play with the other kids! I can’t wait to get snuggles from all my family members that I’ve had to stay away from. Like I said earlier, my parents are literal superheroes. But even superheroes struggle sometimes. Right now we aren’t in my hometown so my parents stay with me here at the hospital. My dad travels back and forth for work from Ottawa to Montreal to come see me, but he’s currently off work in preparation for the upcoming BMT and will need a few weeks to recover after the BMT. My mom hasn’t been able to go back to work because she’s been taking care of me at the hospital. My parents have made so many sacrifices for me in the last year. I would love it if we could all come together to help them. They are so deserving of some help right now. My family is seeking financial assistance to help offset the costs of living accommodations, food and travel during this difficult time. If you are not able to contribute financially, we would love for you to please share this page with your family and friends. Your prayers are appreciated so much throughout my journey. Thank you for taking the time to get to know me and my family. #Donations4DD
