Olive had a big year in 22/23 she started competing in gymnastics, and not only did she love it, she excelled! Olive took first in many of her events and made the regional team where she would represent the Midwest at the nationals tournament, which was something she was truly proud of. Unfortunately this year came with some challenges. After falling ill, Olive was taken to the hospital. The doctors could not diagnose what was causing her illness, so she was in and out of the hospital for a few days. Back in the hospital on the morning of June 23, Olive woke up and was her normal self that morning. She laughed, walked around the halls, and made her mom be interested in every detail of the movie “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On”. She ate pancakes and bacon and was in great spirits. But when she woke up from her nap around 2pm everything changed. She got up and immediately started vomiting, saying “oh my god, it’s too much”. She was disoriented and obviously in pain, so the nurse was called. Her blood pressure had spiked and in a matter of an hour, Olive went from a normal kid to awake but completely unresponsive. Immediately, her hospital room was filled with nurses and doctors trying multiple different techniques to get her respond without any luck. Olive was taken to CT and began to have seizures. Olive was air lifted to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN where she stayed for 5 days having to be to be intubated twice, receive a kidney biopsy, an EEG, an MIR and, according to Olive, “13 pokes” (she counted every time they took a blood draw or do another test). Multiple specialists were consulted on her case… including nerurologist, nephrologist, cardiologist, infectious disease, and an others just trying to help this poor girl. She was very brave and resilient, but her journey is far from over. Olive will continue to have brain tests, blood tests, follow ups in Rochester, and hopefully no unexpected stays but we can’t count on that. Olive is the most gentle and sensitive human. She has empathy for the worms and bugs she digs up in the dirt in her yard. At her preschool graduation, she proudly announced that she wants to be an OBGYN when she grows up, because she wants to take care of people. Olive is a great friend and has a hilarious sense of humor. The funds from this cause will go towards helping the family cover medical bills and any other related costs that incured during Olives sickness. Thank you so much for helping and for your thoughts and best wishes.
