Hi, we are Demi and Rachel, both primary school teachers from Essex aiming to raise funds for one of our extraordinary pupils - Sophia. On August 20th, we will be running 10K at Greenwich Park, supported by friends and family! The lovely Sophia has SMA (Spinal Muscular Atrophy) and has had a particularly bumpy time over the last year. Rachel & I have had the honour of teaching Sophia. Sophia is a pure ray of sunshine. She is kind, quick-witted, funny and a pleasure to teach. We would love to give them a little something extra by running a 10K and raising some funds to support her family with the cost of physio and any additional equipment that Sophia may need. Here is an explanation of some of the journey Sophia and her family have been on this year in their own words - 'As some of you will know - Sophia (our daughter) had gene therapy to treat her Spinal Muscular Atrophy. (For those who don’t know - SMA is a muscle wasting condition which without treatment is terminal.) Unfortunately, the side effects including life threatening liver injury forced Sophia to stay in hospital for several months bed bound. Even when she came home her physical activity was limited until recently. This all has taken toll on her muscles, especially those supporting her spine. We now facing another battle of building up her strength and rehabilitation of her muscles to maximise the positive impact of gene therapy. We do a lot of daily physio, but without regular professional input, we just stumbling from one problem to the other.' Sophia's physio and cost of physio equipment is something funded by her family and we would love to support this by donating as much money as possible!! So please, if possible sponsor our run. Any money donated will be sent directly to Sophia's family to help get Sophia moving!!
