On June 22nd, 2024, my mom’s life changed forever. My mom, Dawn True, was diagnosed with invasive lobular carcinoma on June 22nd, 2024. Invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) is the second most common type of breast cancer. Invasive lobular carcinoma, also known as infiltrating lobular carcinoma, begins in the milk-producing glands (lobules) of the breast. As an invasive type of cancer, ILC has spread beyond its original tumor site. Over time, ILC may become metastatic breast cancer. This means it will use the lymphatic system or bloodstream to move into other areas of the body. It is imperative that women pursue regular mammograms and advocate for their health. My mom can now tell you this firsthand. Following a routine mammogram, my mom was given the news that there was a "suspicious malignancy" that had a 50% chance of being cancerous. We waited a painful few days before the biopsy was scheduled. It was a grueling few more days before we were given the shocking news that it was, in fact, a cancerous tumor. Our family met with a surgeon, who alleviated some fears by sharing his optimistic outcome and plan for care. On Thursday, July 13, 2024, my mom will begin her breast cancer care journey. Following her surgery, my mom will complete 6-7 weeks of radiation therapy every day, Monday-Friday. Patients with ILC can be effectively treated with lumpectomy and radiation for stage I and II tumors while maintaining a low risk of local recurrence and equivalent overall survival. Thankfully, there are successful treatment options available for this type of widely researched breast cancer. However, it comes with a hefty price tag. I have created this fundraiser in hopes of alleviating some financial stress and burden for my mom and our family as she embarks on this journey. I have received numerous calls and texts with well wishes and prayers, and many of you have asked how you can help. Our hearts have been filled with love and support, and we appreciate you all endlessly.
