Dear friends and all who may read this, my name is Yu Xi and I'm creating this LFEBridge on behalf of my younger brother, Daniel Xi (26). My family and I don't often ask for help, especially so publicly, but we feel like we must. Who is Daniel? Daniel is and has always been a very outgoing, friendly, intelligent, tenacious, and optimistic individual. He loved fishing, food, badminton, and most of all loved his friends and family. When he wasn't found hard at work or in the gym, he was always amongst loved ones doing a fun activity, gorging on food, or enjoying fun experiences. This is who he was and who I'm hoping we can see again. The Injury, ICU, and Survival On June 3, 2024, near midnight, Daniel was rushed to the hospital after falling and sustaining a devastating head injury. We were called by the admitting nurse with instructions to come to the emergency room right away. Upon arrival, we were told to sit as the emergency room doctor said that we should prepare our goodbyes as he had suffered such a severe brain hemorrhage that survival was slim, even with immediate surgery. However, due to Daniel's young age, a neurosurgeon approved the emergency neurosurgery and his life was spared that night. What came after was 38 days of ICU care where he was under heavy sedation nearly the entire time. He even had to be placed under medically induced full-body paralysis to reduce his brain stress. It took the entire ICU stay for his brain swelling to subside a moderate amount and he suffered severe neuro-storms (unconscious movements, extremely high heart rate and temperature, body flexing and shaking) the entire time. During this time, he required 2 more surgeries (tracheostomy and PEG) to attach a breathing and feeding tube as it was expected that he wouldn't recover anytime soon. It was during this ICU stay that we received devastating news: his best-case prognosis is likely eye tracking without the capability of conscious movement. While we respect the professional opinions of the medical team, as his family we have to keep hope that Daniel will eventually recover enough to show us his previous, exuberant self. Road to Recovery On July 11, 2024, Daniel was deemed stable and was transferred to a long-term acute care hospital where he stays to this day and will remain for the foreseeable future. In this hospital, Daniel has made daily, marginal improvements and as of July 30, 2024, he is capable of tracking an individual with his eyes as they walk into his line of sight and occasionally respond to basic questions through blinking! Daniel's road to recovery is expected to be long and arduous with enormous uncertainty, but we know he'll pull through due to his strength and incredible tenacity. My family and I plan on using this LFEBridge to aid in the mounting medical expenses associated with his care, both current and long-term. From the Xi family, we truly thank you from the bottom of our hearts for taking the time to read about Daniel's story and for donating if you are able. Thank you, The Xi family
