My name is Gia and Christina (Connie) Ayer is my sister. She was having health issues 10 years ago, but was misdiagnosed for over 2 years. Finally they discovered she has Vulvar cancer which is not common. It is caused by the HPV virus. This is a common virus but in many people it becomes cancerous over a period of 20 years. The doctor took aggressive measures and Christina endured a full vulvectomy and hysterectomy. There were other treatments that should have been attempted first but unfortunately we can not go back in time. She was referred to another doctor and was diligently watched and treated for 6 years. Then she discovered she had a problem again and had surgery about 7 months ago. They said the cancer was too deep to remove it all and the only alternative is chemo and radiation for 7 weeks. Chemo once a week and radiation 5 times a week. She did the chemo 2 times but her blood tests show that it is affecting her kidneys and cant continue the chemo. I spoke to her nurse at the radiation clinic and she said the radiation for this cancer is probably the most painful anyone can endure. This is a very personal cancer and rare so she doesn't discuss it with many people. She hides her pain as best she can and rarely complains. She did say she would never ever do radiation again. She doesn't post her problems on Facebook or anywhere for that matter. It has come now to the point where I am stepping in and making this public. She will be mortified that I am asking for help on her behalf but this is critical. Being that she can't do the chemo, the last resort is Immunotherapy. Immunotherapy is a type of cancer treatment that helps your immune system fight cancer. Insurance doesn't cover it all and the treatment will cost over $100,000. I am asking for help to raise half that amount. For those who don't know her allow me to tell you about my sister. She is a person who has devoted most of her life helping the underdog. She is tough, no nonsense, tells you like it is with no sugar coating. If you have any fight on your hands Christina will be the first to do the research to make it a fair fight. Whether it be with a landlord, or an insurance issue or an inmate in prison she will go the extra mile to make sure someone doesn't get lost in the system. The remarkable thing is that she does it all for nothing. She does it because many people do not know how to fight for themselves or even know that they have the right to appeal decisions or are so overwhelmed by the sea of paperwork and forms that come with fighting the system that they simply give up. Her phone is constantly ringing and it makes me crazy because it just doesn't stop. I had mentioned my amazement at how many friends and people she has in her life. She said they are not my friends, they need me. That made me so sad that she doesn't see that people might need her but they also will consider her the toughest baddest angel they ever met. Because she was there during their darkest times. People are in our lives for a reason, a season or a lifetime. Most people are in her life for a reason or possibly a season. She needs help now . She needs to be the reason right now. She has endured years of pain and treatments so my wish for her is that she can get this final treatment and spend her years enjoying life. It has been years of suffering. It would be a tragedy to have gone through all this only to die because she didn't get the treatment that could finally give her some quality of life . Times are tough but I am asking you to please make my sister your REASON today and help me try to save her life. I want to be able to get her this treatment but the bottom line is make people aware that this can be a deadly virus, that is why they have the vaccine for children so that 20 years from now they don't have this battle to fight. Every dollar makes a difference so no donation is too small. Thank you so much. Christina on the left
