UPDATE 7/28/2024: Cherokee turns 43 today. We were able to medevac Cherokee home. He did aspirate and is fighting off pneumonia. Cherokee was LifeFlighted to Kadlec in Kennewick. Though he is battling through this difficult time he is surrounded by family and loved ones. UPDATE 7/17/23: The Navy will be covering some or most of the moving costs for his family. There will be some moving fees not covered, which is where these funds will go towards. The funds will also be used for appropriate housing for him and his family. Hello, my name is Shoshoni Walker and I am reaching out on behalf of my brother, Cherokee Walker, and his family. Cherokee is a member of the Klamath Tribes, and has served his country for 17 years in the Navy and is currently on active duty as a Fire Controlman Aegis First Class. Recently he has been diagnosed with a very rare neurological disease, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). CJD is a very rapid disorder that affects his physical and cognitive abilities. CJD is a terminal condition with a median life expectancy of eight months. Three of these precious months have already been spent trying to get the military to allow him to come home, something they were unwilling to allow until recently. Currently, Cherokee is stationed in Dahlgren, Virginia Naval Base and he is being cared for by his wife, Shaun, and children. Cherokee and Shaun have a very large family here in Oregon who want to support and love him while we can. Being back in Oregon will also mean he is able to get tribal assistance, something that he currently cannot do. We are working with doctors to get him medevac from Virginia to Oregon and I am planning on flying out to Virginia to be with Cherokee for the medevac back. His wife and kids will be left in Virginia to pack the house and drive cross country. We are hoping to get Cherokee here for his birthday on July 28th so he can be surrounded by family. There are many uncertainties in his journey though. The Navy will not pay for his family's moving costs. After we get him back home in Oregon, we need to find his family housing that is acceptable for his care as well as affording the care itself. This is how the funds raised will be used: Allowing his family the ability to afford his care, and relocating him and his family back home to Oregon.
