Mel sought care from an emergency dentist on July 30th for an emergency root canal after being unable to receive dental care for over a year. After receiving multiple rounds of local anesthesia, Mel was still feeling every bit of pain and sensation. When as much was communicated to the dentist, a medical professional who was responsible for Mel’s care, it was ignored. The dentist insisted Mel was not in any pain despite multiple indications they were in “the most pain I’ve ever felt in my entire life.” This dentist also told Mel to stop crying and screaming in pain as it was a “distraction”. The “care” being administered eventually became so painful, unsafe, and neglectful that Mel was left with no choice but to stop the procedure mid-way and is now seeking a referral to have additional oral surgery to correct the damage done in this procedure and finish the initial, necessary root canal. Like many of us, Mel relies on gig work to survive. They maintain multiple jobs and work extremely hard, but due to the nature of our health care system, dental insurance is far out of reach. Mel is an incredible friend, member of their community, and a hard working entertainer and performer. As a result of this negligence and abuse, Mel is unable to open their mouth wide enough to speak or sing, both of which are vital to their livelihood as a night life performer. They were left with an unfinished root canal packed with gauze, in extreme pain, and with instructions to come back in a few days. No further instruction or care beyond a 600mg Tylenol prescription was given. Mel is left with an unsealed root canal with exposed nerves and no pain management or scheduled follow up. This means they are at risk of further complications while they seek immediate suitable care elsewhere. Mel was experiencing so much pain they sought emergency dental care despite the extremely prohibitive cost, and they are now in considerably more physical pain, trauma, and financial burden as a result of Medical negligence and abuse.
