My name is Cortney Holles and I am raising funds for my uncle, Jason Jorgenson. If you know my uncle Jason (Jake)Jorgenson, you probably know he’s an excellent chef and you may have had the privilege of tasting his culinary delights. You also probably know he’s a lifelong heavy metal and Star Wars fan, a well-read and adept conversationalist, and a fantastic human being. You might also know that diabetes has long been slowing him down, resulting in End Stage Renal Disease that requires dialysis three times a week. In addition, he has a progressive condition, called Charcot foot, that involves the gradual weakening of bones, joints, and soft tissues of the foot or ankle. It is caused by peripheral neuropathy(nerve damage) in which the foot or ankle becomes insensitive to pain. Jake was in a car accident at the beginning of June that further injured his right foot. His car was totaled, which left him with no way to get to dialysis and no compensation from the uninsured driver who caused the accident. The foot injury required him to wear a boot creating an ulcer that would not heal. At the beginning of July he spiked a fever that landed him in the hospital, Doctors took a closer look and found that the ulcer was infected, and the infection was threatening to spread throughout his body. However, the doctor’s suggestion of a BKA (below the knee amputation)was hard to accept. Jake was transferred to Sioux Falls for additional opinions from doctors at Sanford Hospital to make sure this was the right decision and it was clear the BKA needed to be done. On Sunday, July 23, surgery to remove Jake’s foot but keep the knee was successful. He is now entering an intense rehabilitation phase. Over the coming days and weeks Jake will need to learn how to navigate his space with mobility aids. It will take about six months for the wound to completely heal, when he will then be fitted with a prosthetic. The weeks and months ahead will prove to be very challenging for Jake as he progresses through physical therapy, looks for handicapped accessible housing, secures viable transportation to dialysis, incurs additional medical expenses and begins to navigate life as an amputee. Jake will be treading in unknown waters in the future weeks without a clear picture of what his financial obligations will be. Any support you can offer will make a big difference in his life. Thank you! The Jorgenson and Person families
