Hi friends, welcome to my fundraising page! As many of you know, I had an unexpected surgery last month, a couple of days after my 25th birthday. After suffering from excruciating abdominal pain, migraines, gastritis and intense acid reflux for months I could finally have a peaceful night of sleep, breath and eat without pain, because of a Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy (surgery to remove the gallbladder) realized on September 9th at St. Joseph's Hospital, Lexington, KY. Unfortunatly, surgeries cost an incredible amount of money... and my wonderful new life without a sick gallbladder came with a painful amount of medical bills. My insurance was able to pay for around 60% of the total but I still have a very challenging amount of bills to pay out of pocket: $10,000 USD. I've been doing everything I can to pay for my bills and negociate with hospitals but being a student in a foreign country make things very, very difficult. I can't work more than the 20 hours/week I already work, I can't have loans or credit cards, I can't have a payment plan and most urgently: I am afraid I can't register for classes next semester! I had to visit the ER twice last month (because of the pain) and these visits to the university's hospital automatically put a hold on my account if are not paid by next month. My family in Brazil have very limited funding and I am only able to attend the University of Kentucky after winning the transfer award of the Alltech Scholarship Competition 2013, which gratefully covers tuition for my Music Performance major in voice. Most of my expenses are paid by myself with student work at Singletary Center for the Arts, UK Opera Theater and as an International Student Ambassador. Also, beacause of exchange rates, every 1 real (Brazilian currency) my family is able to give me, I get only $0,25, which makes every help from them even more difficult. During the next months I will be selling brigadeiros, a Brazilian caramel chocolate fudge in different flavors on a beautiful origami box with 6 units for $5.
