Hi All I'm Barb, non-binary 22-year-old living in Scotland. The discomfort I've felt towards my chest since puberty was one of the first and main things that made me realise I was trans. The first time I put on a binder, I was so happy I cried and it was a life-changing experience. Unfortunately, chest binders are not comfortable and safe to wear in the long term and I cannot imagine myself binding for the rest of my life. I simply want to be able to go outside without hating how my chest looks. This is why I will be getting a mastectomy - a top surgery to make my chest flat and more masculine-looking. I have already taken steps to make this happen! I have seen a gender specialist GP, and a clinical psychologist for a second opinion, and I have been approved for a gender-affirming surgery by both of them. I had my last GP appointment after which I got my referral on the 31st of August! I have also had my pre-surgery consultation with the surgeon and we've scheduled my surgery for the 19th of October. Due to the horrendous state of transgender healthcare services in NHS*, I have decided to get my treatment through a private clinic. I have worked part-time through high school and university in order to save money, and I am working full-time now after graduating, but the costs of everything are so high that I would really appreciate any financial help in achieving my goal. I have set my goal at £4,000 which is about half the price of the surgery. *Current waiting time is over 5 years for first appointment in Glasgow which makes it around 10 years or more to get the actual surgery. Also no gender affirming surgery on the NHS currently provided in Scotland. (see links) I so appreciate any help to make me feel like myself. Barb (they/them)
