Garrett Goodpasture met his mom and dad, Amber and Andrew Goodpasture, for the first time on October 19, 2015, but their introduction was brief. Immediately, mom and dad knew something was wrong when there baby boy was taken away and surrounded by medical staff. Garrett’s umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck and he had fluid in his lungs. Garrett’s lack of oxygen left no time to bond with mom and dad. Once Garrett’s oxygen levels were stable, doctor’s discovered that Garrett had a cleft palate, a small lower jaw, and a tongue that is placed further back than normal, which all effect Garett’s ability to swallow and breathe. Eventually doctors diagnosed baby Garrett with Pierre Robin Sequence. Due to Garrett’s condition, dad and Garrett were transported to a different hospital while mom was directed to stay behind and recover before she could be discharged. When Garrett arrived at the NICU, the severity of Garrett’s cleft palate interfered with his ability to swallow and required a feeding tube to be placed, so that Garrett would be able to eat. Unfortunately, the only surgeon in the area that performs the multitude of surgeries baby Garrett will need in order to be able to swallow on his own is relocating to a different area and will be unable to perform surgery on Garrett, since there are no other specialist locally to follow up on his recovery. Garrett is currently being cared for in the NICU where his breathing can be monitored and he can continue to be fed through his tube, however Garrett will need to be transported to Duke or UVA hours away from home for treatment. It may be 9 to 12 months before doctors can even operate on Garrett and he will need to be monitored around the clock. Right now, mom and dad have more questions than answers, but it’s clear that the medical bills for Garrett are just beginning. As a mother myself, I cannot imagine having to worry about how to pay for my babies care, treatment, and surgeries. If you know Amber and Andrew you also know that they would never ask for help, which is why we are setting up this page and reaching out for help on their behalf. Andrew is a dedicated firefighter, father, husband, and best friend. Amber is a selfless mother, wife, and supportive best friend. Andrew and Amber are compassionate people who give 100% in all that they do. This family needs our help in order to afford the care and surgeries that precious baby Garrett needs. Anything you can contribute to Garrett’s care would be a blessing to the family. If you cannot contribute, but believe in the power of prayer, please keep the Goodpasture family in your prayers.
