When my sister, Beth, was in the process of moving to Saudi Arabia, it became very important to her that Patches, her furry feline friend, come along for the journey. She hired an international cat broker, spent $1,500, and had the cat probed and prodded in all sorts of unmentionable manners to prove, beyond any doubt, that Patches was indeed a cat. On the Saturday of her departure, an icy winter storm descended on Houston and postponed her flight another 72 hours. Unfortunately, Patches' kitty passport expired the day after the scheduled flight - which was now two days before her actual flight. Patches was in a pickle.Completely unsure how I could help my beloved sister smuggle her beloved cat, I did what any of us would do - I called Ms. Alicia. On Saturday. And begged. To this day, I have idea how she did it, but, by sun down on Sunday, Alicia had an appointment scheduled for my sister with a USDA representative first thing Monday morning. Even the cat broker was unaware of the presence of this USDA lady in the middle of downtown Houston and her magical ability to clear cat customs with one stroke of her magic pen. It raised a lot of questions in my mind about the professional requirements for becoming an international cat broker, but - needless to say - I think Alicia has what it takes and then some.We all have our stories of Mama Alicia coming through to save the day. This campaign is a small, silly little way we can say THANK YOU to her for all she's done over all these years for all the people we know and the many, many more we'll never meet. The $1,500 target will cover four nights at the Riverside Hilton in New Orleans and leave a little left over for Mama to spend how she sees fit.DO IT!
