Hello, my name is Audrey Schrader, I am fundraising on behalf of my eldest son, Art Schrader. I am creating this fundraiser to help ease the financial burdens that Art faces due to his recent life-altering surgery. All the funds raised here will go directly towards medical expenses, accessible housing, and necessary lifestyle expenses. What happened: On June 9th Art went to the doctor and had an infection removed at the bottom of his foot. On June 10th and 11th, the infection got worse and his entire right leg started to swell. On June 12th I took him to the Emergency Room and he was immediately admitted due to the severity of his infection. Once admitted he was administered three different antibiotics to try and stop the infection from spreading in his foot. Unfortunately, the antibiotics were unsuccessful and the doctor decided to operate on his foot in hopes that it would eliminate the infection and prevent it from spreading any further. The Next Two Weeks: After his surgery on the 14th when Art returned to his room, he began to experience difficulty breathing. It was then discovered that he not only had a bacterial infection in his lungs, but he was also battling a bacterial infection in his stomach. He was given two separate antibiotics to treat these infections. While being administered the antibiotics the doctor noticed that his two middle toes were beginning to turn black. As an attempt to avoid operating again. Art received stronger antibiotics for his foot infection. Unfortunately, the antibiotics were unsuccessful and his heel began to turn black as well. The doctors decided on June 16th to operate once again to remove even more of the infection. After his second surgery Art began to have severe fevers which were treated with even stronger antibiotics. It was then discovered that the infection that had started in his foot had spread to his bones. Despite his medical team having done everything possible to prevent amputation, the fact that it was now in his bones the only way to prevent the infection from spreading to the rest of his leg was to amputate below the knee. On June 20th he had a successful surgery and the infection finally stopped spreading. Although the surgery was successful Art still had severe pneumonia that needed to be treated, along with the intense pain he was feeling from his surgery both physically and emotionally. The reality of losing part of his leg started to settle in and it made him think about all the things he would no longer be able to do. Finally, when his infection cleared he started the next part of his journey, rehab. For two weeks Art worked hard building his upper body strength as well as relearning the simple tasks we do each day automatically. The Next Part of the Journey: On July 10th Art finally came home, but the reality of his new situation became quite real. There are now many added expenses to make his home more accessible to him. Not only does the house need to be modified, but the process of getting a prosthetic leg is not only extremely expensive but also one that will take a great deal of time. Art’s journey has only begun; he still has a long road ahead of him in recovering from this surgery, relearning things that were once so easy for him to do, accepting his new lifestyle, and once fitted with a prosthetic he will require a great deal more physical therapy. All of these things do add up. All the funds raised here will be used exclusively for Art’s medical and lifestyle expenses, which include: home accessibility modifications medical equipment and supplies medications at home care Wheelchairs and other mobility devices Prosthetics lost wages I understand that these are difficult times for us all; however, if you can find it in your heart to donate what you can, no amount is too small and will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for all your love and support. Audrey Schrader
