Hi, My name is Andrew and I'm creating this fundraiser on behalf of my mother Ana Filipe, we are not typically a family that seeks financial help as we are used to doing things for ourselves, but it seems we've come to a bit of a situation where I feel she may need some assistance but she has too much pride to ask. She was recently diagnosed with cancer in the cervix, we were informed that it was a 3cm mass and that it was likely that it could be removed by either radiation or surgery. This happened about 4 weeks ago. We are now being told that the cancer has possibly moved to the lymph nodes in her pelvic area, from what we know. it's on the border of the uterus/cervix so we're still trying to get info. She has a PET Scan on Saturday, August 5th, to determine whether it is cancer in the lymph nodes or not, but all signs are pointing to it being the case. She is also scheduled for Radiation and Chemo starting August 17 for the next few months. Which unfortunately is going to lay her off from work, and the way she was raised traditionally by her parents. She doesn't work a high-paying job with great benefits. We have been in and out of Princess Margaret Hospital probably twice a week for a few hours in hopes that she can get some alternative financial assistance. The hospital mentioned financial help, but the only thing we've been informed of is a parking discount of 15%. I have tried looking for alternative solutions to finding her financial help but her work is no avail, her union does cover sick leave but it is up to 6 months (unpaid). Her union being SEIU Local 2. We are going to apply for Sick Leave EI which can potentially be about 55% of her income, which realistically ends up being like $350 a week which is absolutely ridiculous. She is a great mother, at 57 years old even after the diagnosis she still puts everybody else before herself and tries hard to make sure everyone is happy, she still manages to cook, clean, do laundry, and be there for her grandkids when able to be. We also lost our dad to suicide a long while back so she's been by herself for the last 15 years, essentially raising all of us on her own. She's done so much for us and we were hoping we can help return the favor. So we're asking for anyone that can help in any way. We don’t have a goal as to how much she needs realistically but I'm just asking for some assistance to get her back on her feet. We were completely blindsided by the diagnosis, and it has definitely been straining all of us mentally. I will personally be sending everything directly to her savings to make sure she is taken care of during the treatment process. I work sometimes 7 days a week so I will do my best to be at her appointments with her. Thank you so much to anyone that took the time to read this or decided to help out, you have no idea how much we appreciate this. We have always been a family that tries to do good for everybody that we can help, and as stated above. This is not something that we would normally do. Especially my mom. I just feel like this is going to be tough on her, especially now with the cost of living and her being laid off with only an EI income. Any help would be incredibly appreciated. Thank you again, Andrew.
