Thursday October 22nd 2015, I took our daughter Alexa (3yrs old) for a routine check up at her pediatricians for fevers and occasional abdominal pain. Her pediatrician scheduled an ultrasound which showed a large mass was present. Right away, he contacted the CHKD in Norfolk Virginia to get her seen right away, and had an appointment for her the following day friday October 23rd, 2015. Once we arrived at CHKD a Catscan and MRI was done which confirmed the tumor growing from her left kidney and also showed lesions on both lungs ( all cancerous) and the bottom of her spinal cord. They found out she is anemic and was put on Amlodiphine due to high blood pressure. That night, she had her first surgery for a biopsy on the lungs and a port put in for chemotherapy.Monday, the pathology report came in and confirmed stage 4 Wilms and started her on Vinchristine and Dactinomycin chemotherapy. If all goes well they hope to shrink the tumor ( it is high risk and not safe to remove due to the size and vital organs) with continuous Chemotherapy once a week, for 6 weeks and then schedule the removal of the large tumor and her left kidney. They will continue Chemotherapy as well as Radiation. ( It was hard to hear this will affect her female organs and she has a very slim to none chance of her ever having children, but I was adopted and there's many kids in need of loving mothers.)A third Chemotherapy drug Doxorubicin will also be administered in the following weeks. We are fortunate to have CHKD close by, but it is still over an hour drive to and from. Hospitalizations are expected if any fevers develope as well and severe sickness. We are fortunate to have jobs, but a lot of time off is expected and necessary. We also want others to be aware to donate blood any chance you can. She will be receiving blood transfusions, and blood donations are very important.Continuous Prayers are always needed for her as well as our family and the CHKD staff.
