On June 8th our parents’ lives were turned upside down. Our stepdad, Jay Ferguson, suffered a severe brain aneurysm, and stroke. He was incredibly fortunate to have been taken to Richardson Methodist Medical Center where he arrived on life support and the initial prognosis was 48 hours to live. This was hard to believe because Jay is one of the most resilient humans we have ever met. He has been through a myriad of BMX injuries, he has broken just about every bone in his body, and had to have his face reconstructed from a BMX injury in his twenties. He has always been a fighter, and at only 54 years old, he has so much life left to live. Jay lives a healthy life, he’s never been a drinker or smoker, he’s always been the most level-headed and calm person in a room, which made this even harder to understand. During his 43 days in ICU, he continued to fight, and shock all of his doctors with his will to live through all of this. He endured two brain surgeries, one to relieve pressure in his skull, and one to stop the brain bleed. He fought through his recovery from these surgeries while also tackling pneumonia. He began responding to stimulating exercises, and every therapy treatment immediately; continuing to improve each and every day. Happily, he is now at a rehabilitation center, doing the hard work everyday to improve until it is time to return home, and hopefully to a mostly normal life. Jay’s situation is a miracle, and we can not even begin to express how grateful our family is to be able to say that he is still here with us, and was cared for by the most incredible team of medical professionals that we could have ever asked for. This was the best ending of this story for our family. No matter where you are in life, when faced with a scenario that must cause all working to stop, and more than a million dollars worth of medical bills and rehabilitation costs adding up, you simply need the help of the people around you for so much not covered by this excessive amount. My Mother, being first-born in the birth order of her family, has always been our rock, and has the strongest spirit of anyone we know. But, she is 72 (and going to kill us for saying that) and has a lot on her plate trying to cover the upfront cost of rehab, continuing to run the business she and Jay have together; while also finding the energy and positivity of being present for him. We are creating this page in hopes of helping relieve some of the enormous financial stress of this experience for our parents. Thank you all for the outpouring your positive thoughts and prayers, they mean so much to our entire family. Patricia Hill & David Luke.
