This is Joshua Mayer, fundraising on behalf of my wonderful little sister, Isabella Mayer. I'd first like to thank all of our friends and family who have sent their love, prayers, and positive energy to Bella during this difficult time. I created this fundraiser to help ease the financial burdens that Bella will face as she moves into this next chapter of her life. Funds raised here will contribute to medical expenses, necessary lifestyle alterations, accessible housing, and any additional costs that may accompany her injury. What Happened: On June 24th, Bella was finishing up a shift at her job late in the evening. While she was leaving, Bella was hit and pinned by a car, severely damaging her left leg. Bella was transported to a nearby hospital, where doctors found that blood was no longer flowing down below her knee. Because of this, Bella was rushed into surgery in an attempt to save her leg. After ten hours of surgery, Bella was returned to the ICU. For the next 3 days, doctors monitored Bella's condition, waiting to see if blood would begin to properly flow down her leg again. It never did. The Following Days: After the first 24 hours following Bella's surgery, there was very little sign of blood flow below her left knee. After bringing in multiple surgeons to assess the situation, Bella received the news that the chances of her leg being saved were next to none. Even if, by some miracle, blood began to flow down to her foot again, the amount of nerve damage that the crush caused would have rendered her leg useless. During this time, through extreme levels of pain, Bella's gratious spirit remained strong. She constantly asked questions about next steps to her doctors, thanked all of the nurses who were taking care of her, and continued to keep an infectious smile on her face that constantly overpowered all of the grief in the room. Everyone was stunned by her positivity, and she quickly became a favorite among the hospital staff. On Monday June 26th, just two days after the accident, Bella bravely authorized her 2nd surgery: An amputation above the ankle. Following her second surgery, Bella worked with her doctors to figure out the next goal: Save the knee. Prosthetics tend to be much easier to utilize when one has a knee and some bone below still intact. Throughout the next week, Bella endured excruciating pain, often keeping her up throughout the night. At any given time, Bella could have made the decision for the surgeons to amputate her leg above the knee. An above the knee amputation would be a much smoother process, and even get Bella back home within days. Instead, she chose to push forward through the pain for a shot at reclaiming some of the mobility she once had. She has had two more surgerys since then, giving additional doctors a chance to assess the remaining damages to her leg and formulate a gameplan. As of yesterday, they still believe that her knee can be saved. However, the procedure is going to be a tough one. Due to the traumatic injury, Bella may be transferring to another facility in the future. A Little Bit of Bella's Backstory: Isabella Mayer is a loving and brilliant 22-year-old recent and first generation San Francisco State University graduate. (Go Gators!) Bella received two Bachelors of Arts degrees, in both Cinema and Broadcast and Electronic Communication Arts. She was set to move to Las Vegas, Nevada later this month to begin her Masters program in Journalism and Media Studies at University of Nevada, Las vegas. Bella is the proud momma of three dogs, Phillup, Riza, and Kylo. She is an avid gym goer, a very talented video editor with years of professional experience under her belt, and loves Pokémon. What Comes Next: At this time, Bella is expected to remain in the hospital for a few more weeks as the procedures involving her leg finish and an initial monitoring period begins. Once she can be discharged from the hospital, Bella will undergo intense physical therapy for the next few months. Currently, her grad school plans are on pause, but Bella is driven to continue pursuing her higher education and reclaim her independence. Until then, she will be cared for at our family home, which will be altered to accomodate her physical needs. All funds raised will be used exclusively for Isabella's medical and lifestyle expenses, such as: home accessibility modifications medical equipment and supplies medications healthcare services wheelchairs, prosthetics, and other mobility devices accessible housing when Bella moves lost wages I ask that you please send Isabella your love, prayers, and good energies. If you are able to donate to her fundraiser, no matter the size, it is greatly appreciated. If you do donate, please leave a comment full of love for Bella to read. Thank you for taking the time to hear Bella's story and please consider sharing this fundraiser amongst your family, friends, and peers. Let's work together to ensure that Isabella can focus on healing and continue trekking into a future that is bright as she is. Sincerely, Joshua Mayer
