We are the Canoys, a family of six, on a journey filled with both resilience and hope. We were so excited to find out we were pregnant with twins! We finally felt our family was complete. Shortly after birth, in the throws of acclimating to doubling the number of children, our twins, Phoenix and Noralyn faced significant challenges. We've come together as a family to overcome every obstacle that life has thrown our way. Our story began with unexpected difficulties as one of our twins, Phoenix, was rushed to Luries Children’s Hospital due to jaundice in which the extremely high bilirubin levels were causing seizures. With courage and trust, he received medical intervention in the form of an exchange blood transfusion. Extensive testing still did not reveal why he had such high bilirubin levels. During this time I (mom) was supposed to be on bed rest. I would wheelchair myself up and down several floors to nurse and care for Phoenix’s twin, Noralyn. This was still when there were Covid restrictions and no one else was allowed on the same floor. So we had to coordinate between mom and dad visiting with him and taking care of our 3 other children (and three dogs at home - an hour drive away). Finally, after a grueling week in the NICU we were able to come home. So thankful to his wonderful team that had the patience and care to answer all my questions and work with me to get him the best results. The journey didn't end there though. We soon discovered that Phoenix had a rare hearing condition due to the seizures called auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder. This requires additional continuous specialized care. Some months later he was diagnosed with failure to thrive due to issues getting enough calories and nutrition. Despite facing numerous hurdles, Phoenix's indomitable spirit continues to shine. He has shown incredible resilience in the face of challenges, all while having the most joyful smile on his face! His journey involves constant therapy sessions - physical, occupational, speech, hearing, vision, and nutrition. These therapies are almost daily and now with him having an NG tube so he can gain proper weight, it is difficult for me to find a regular full-time job even as a naturopathic doctor. I also want to ensure he gets the care he needs, so it’s important for me to be by his side through all of this. Noralyn, Phoenix's twin, also had her share of struggles. Only weeks after Phoenix was in the NICU, she was also taken by ambulance to the hospital. She was facing blood clotting issues, and also required an exchange blood transfusion. Today, she is also struggling to gain weight, and we are constantly seeking answers and problem solving to provide her with the best possible care. As a family, we have faced financial hardships that have left us with no choice but to pull money from our house and retirement to pay for bills. We've tried our best to meet the overwhelming expenses brought on by our twins' medical needs and lack of second income, but it has been an uphill battle. However, we remain hopeful and proactive in seeking solutions. In the midst of our challenges, I'm working tirelessly on creating a coaching program to bring in consistent income for our family. By sharing my knowledge and expertise as a spiritual naturopath, I aim to coach other healers. This program was inspired by the work I did with Phoenix and helping him overcome his adversities in the NICU, as an infant, and growing child. I truly feel it’s the amazing medical team and our integrative approach that helped save his life, allowed for massive shifts that has now shown us a happy and thriving child. This coaching program represents our determination to become more self-sufficient and provide a stable foundation for our children. While also being able to bring this type of healing to many other people. We are reaching out to you, our community, and kind-hearted individuals, to help us break free from the cycle of hardship. Our goal is to raise funds to pay off some debt, which will lower our monthly payments and allow us to afford healthier, more nutritious meals, proper clothing and shoes for our children, orthodontic care for our oldest child, chiropractic care for Phoenix, and additional medical supplies that could be necessary for Phoenix’s future. We dream of providing Phoenix (and hopefully his twin, Nora) with music therapy, as well as access to aquatic or equine therapy. These activities would not only contribute to his development but also bring a smile to his face. Our dream is to see our twins thriving, overcoming their challenges, and embracing life with joy and ease. We humbly ask for your support and compassion to help us provide the best possible care for Phoenix and Noralyn, and still provide for our older two children as well. Your generosity will improve their lives and also impact the well-being of our entire family. Together, we can create a brighter and healthier future for all of our children, filled with hope and happiness.
