Near the end of the snowboarding season, my beautiful girlfriend had an injury that initially ended her snow season but now has assisted in an early diagnosis that may not have been found otherwise. She has been diagnosed with breast cancer after a concern in one of her breasts from the injury resulted in genetic testing which was positive for BRCA1. Subsequently, a mass was found on the opposite side during her workup. She now has been told her insurance will not cover the surgery she needs to remove the cancer. Hi, I'm Kobie Irish, and I am Jamie's boyfriend. It has broken my heart to see someone I love going through not only an unexpected diagnosis at such a young age but now also dealing with the financial burden associated with her upcoming surgery. After the injury to her right shoulder, she had some swelling in her right breast. When she first noticed the change, she thought it was related to her snowboarding injury. She thought things would get better with time. However, things didn't get better and finally, she went to her medical provider. They performed an exam but couldn't find any masses or anything of concern. She thought she possibly had a family history of breast cancer but had always been hesitant to get genetic testing. Her fear related to the change in her breast caused her to proceed with genetic testing. The results came back positive for BRCA1 and the rest of her workup is still what shocks us. During her mammogram, she was told there was a concerning finding on the left side, not the right side she was worried about. The workup continued with her having a biopsy performed. Two samples were taken at the time of the biopsy and more couldn't be taken because the biopsy machine broke. Luckily, the two samples confirmed there was breast cancer. She met with a surgical oncology surgeon who recommended proceeding with a double mastectomy. The decision was made not only based on the biopsy findings but also because of her BRCA1 diagnosis. The codes for surgery have been submitted to insurance and have now been denied. She has been faced with a significant financial responsibility on top of the already stressful situation of surgery that she will undergo in the next coming weeks. I am hopeful that the initial diagnosis is the final diagnosis. From what has been discussed in her visits, until the tissue is taken at the time of surgery it is difficult to know whether or not she will need any additional treatment. Please send your thoughts and prayers as she undergoes her upcoming surgery. SHe needs all the positive energy and vibes she can get right now. I am hopeful she will have a smooth surgery and recovery, but even more hopeful she will not need any additional treatment.
