After taking Gavin to 3 ER’s in 3 weeks- each time being told he was just suffering from sever migraines, then being sent home after giving him a migraine cocktail. We took him again- this time refusing to leave until every test possible was performed. Within 10 min of his MRI being done he was ambulanced to Texas Children’s Hospital & being prepped for an emergency Craniotomy. The MRI showed a 3 inch abcess on his brain. The infection was so severe it had broken the barrier from his nasal cavity & seeped into his brain. 48 hrs after this surgery Gavin’s brain was swelling more than anticipated & he was rushed for a 2nd brain surgery- Hemicraniectomy- to remove a portion of his skull to allow the brain to swell & reduce cranial pressure. During this surgery they performed an Endoscopic nasal surgery to remove any left over infection in his nasal cavity. Although these surgeries were successful, 3 life saving surgeries in 48 hours was traumatic for our 16 yr old son. He also will be dealing with the risks of missing a portion of his skull for at least 3 months. Unfortunately he had a few big setbacks that hit his already fragile body after the surgeries. He spent 52 days hospitalized. His recovery was slow & painful BUT GAVIN IS A WARRIOR & HIS FAITH IS STRONG! He fought hard everyday & was determined to get back to feeling like himself. Through it all he stayed positive, he never lost hope & his attitude was inspiring. He had GOD by his side every step of the way. The Surgeons, Doctors & Nurses were consistently amazed by his recovery! While Gavin is moving forward in his recovery, he has one more brain surgery scheduled for September. Weekly Dr. appointments, treatments, medications, medical equipment, physical therapy & neurological appointments that he will need to follow up and continue treatments for the foreseeable future. He has a long road to recovery ahead of him. This medical emergency has come with a pretty high price tag . Along with deductibles, out of pocket of expenses, & 52 days in Hospital with both parents by his side for 2 months and an ASTRONOMICAL ! Any financial help/support that you can provide will be such a blessing to this family. If any family is deserving of help, it is this one. This medical emergency could have been avoided had it been caught by the ER doctors that sent them home 3 TIMES. Now the family is helping their son deal with a traumatic medical crisis. A very expensive tragedy. They will also accept any & all prayers, positive vibes & well wishes in full gratitude.
