Hi, my name is Chris Collier and I am a member of the Carlsbad Police Officer's Association (CPOA). I have been a police officer for 15 years, the last 7 with Carlsbad PD. I currently work as a detective in the Crimes of Violence Unit, where we work hand in hand with our crime scene evidence technicians (think CSI). One of my co-workers in the crime lab is John Farrell. John was recently diagnosed with ALS and is facing an uphill battle with this uncurable disease. On September 1st, 2024, I will be running the Ultra Trail Du Mont Blanc (UTMB). This race is the largest, most prestigious trail race in the world (think World Cup of trail running) in which runners must circumnavigate Europe's tallest mountain in a 106-mile run through the French, Swiss, and Italian Alps culminating in over 30,000' of elevation gain within the 46.5 hour time limit. I would like to use this race as a platform to raise money for John's future. All money raised will be donated to John. I will be paying all my expenses for this event. Please support John as he faces the next chapter of his life. I thank you for your donations. ****Update ***** I've completed the race and plan to keep this page open for another week or so. The race was incredible! Amazing views and incredible support from all the villages and towns I ran through. It took me 44 hours and 2 minutes to finish. A bit slower than I hoped, but a nagging hamstring slowed me down on the downhills. Thank you all for your contributions to John's future. You can follow the race at https://live.utmb.world/ I will try to update my Instagram account at https://instagram.com/run_utmb_4_als?igshid=MmIzYWVlNDQ5Yg= John Farrell grew up in the San Diego area, attending Mira Mesa High School and graduating from San Pasqual High School. John obtained his degree in Criminology from Fresno State University in 1992. Immediately after graduating, he began his law enforcement career at the Fresno Police Department in the crime lab, going to crime scenes and working with fingerprints. In 1998, John returned to San Diego and worked as a Forensic Evidence Technician (FET) with the San Diego Sheriff’s Department. He worked there for almost 16 years, including notable cases like the Santana High School shooting in 2001, the Chelsea King serial murder case in 2010, and the Rebecca Zahau death investigation case in 2011. In 2014, John was hired by the Carlsbad Police Department as a Fingerprint and Evidence Specialist in the crime lab. John also taught at Grossmont College in the Forensic Technology Program from 2006 to 2024. John is married to the love of his life, Mia, and they have three daughters, one son, one granddaughter and two dogs. In 2014, John and Mia summitted Kilimanjaro in Africa, and in 2015, John and Mia hiked the 110 circuit of the Tour de Mount Blanc.
