Dear Family, Friends and Former Students:As you know, I am an assistant principal in a marginalized area of New Mexico. Our public high school serves approximately 1600 teenagers. Many of our students come from struggling families.  Many will possibly be the first in their families to graduate from high school and go to college! As an assistant principal, I am personally committed to stopping these amazing young people from potentially "falling through the cracks." When I am able to give a beautiful journal to a struggling, at-risk student, I am able to get them excited about writing. Some students keep "wisdom quote journals." Some students write poetry. Some students use the journal to write down their thoughts about what they are reading and their reactions to life. I now see students literally carrying their special journals all over the school. They tell their friends about their journal and they encourage their friends to come and try to get one as well.  Word spreads fast!  I love seeing a culture of young people reading, writing, and sharing their creativity and ideas with each other.  Prior to this campaign, I had been using my own personal money to buy these writing journals, but every public-school educator in America is financially overwhelmed.  I REALLY need help from you, my former students and my friends. My ultimate goal? Every student needs to learn that they are important and that their life has meaning and potential. I am doing everything I can to get students to succeed in high school, prepare them for college, and to become the best person they are capable of becoming. To invest in the future, I believe we must invest in the youth of today. I am a firm believer that every young person can succeed and that there is no such thing as a "throwaway kid."  In this age of diminished school budgets and serious cuts, funds for these types of successful projects are no longer available.   Thank you for helping me. I have always believed in you too. Dean Leh, M.A., M.S.Ed.Assistant PrincipalNew Mexico
