Thank you for all the support! The Keira Duffy Memorial Fund is now up and running. Please feel free to share in honor of Keira. https://keiraduffymemorialfund.org/ Katie and Patrick (Keira's parents) plan to start a scholarship at Hopkins High School in her name made possible by all of you ❤️. Wow- It is evident just how many lives this family has touched and how much they are loved. So many individuals are sharing beautiful comments about Keira (scroll down to read); what a mark this sweet soul has made. Some teachers have shared she had such a beautiful personality and spirit, and her smile lit up the halls. Recently, my (Sarah) son had his first piano lessons with Katie, and when we went we had the opportunity to visit with Keira. She was excited about her job, joyful, and just glowing. There is also a Meal Train: https://www.mealtrain.com/trains/wq2y9w There is a Caring Bridge for Mary. We pray for continued progress and care. In honor of Keira, whose joyful spirit touched many, perhaps listen to some classical music, say "Hi" to a stranger, or share a laugh with a friend. (Thank you Natalie Sawatzky, Keira's former principal, for the caring tribute). Hug your loved ones. Thank you. We are friends and coworkers of Katie & had the pleasure of knowing Keira. Our hearts are broken and we want to support the families through this incredibly difficult time. Kendra teaches Kindergarten at Meadowbrook Elementary School with Katie. Sarah also teaches at Meadowbrook and her son had a joyful kindergarten year thanks to Ms. Mingo and Ms. York. On Sunday, July 2, 2024, Steven York, Mary York, and Keira Duffy, their 16-year-old granddaughter, were driving home after having attended a wedding in St. Louis, MO. A head-on collision occurred in Floyd Co., Iowa, near Mason City, Iowa. Keira (Katie's daughter) and Steven (Katie's father) did not survive the accident. Mary (Katie’s mother) was taken in critical condition to a hospital where she has currently moved to stable condition.  From Kendra: To say that this event is anything less than tragic would still be an understatement. Over the past few years of working alongside Katie in the classroom, I have been able to see what a compassionate, caring, and funny (though Keira would say "cringey") person she is inside and outside the classroom. She’s one of my favorite people, to say the least. Any time of the day Katie will tell stories of Keira and Will with her students (or whoever was around), and when she does you can feel how much love and pride she has for them. While working with Katie I also had the pleasure of getting to know Keira. She would come help in the classroom, or bake things and bring us a little snack. In the few instances I was able to share with Keira, I saw the kind of person she was and her tenacity for everything she did.  Katie is someone who helps others, loves her job and is amazing at what she does. She cares so much. So whether you know Katie and her family personally, your child (or you, she’s been teaching for 20+ years) has had her as a teacher, or through connections with Keira, Will (Katie’s son), and/or Patrick, please keep them in your thoughts and prayers. ❤️ -Ms. Mingo (Kendra) Our goal is to help alleviate hardships during this time.
