Hi! I'm Sophie. I'm a writer, producer, and actor working alongside my friends and fellow Northwestern MFA alumni, Abby Brooke and Henry Sheeran, the founders of Laundry Day Productions . We’re raising funds to produce the short film THE CRYPTID TAPES, written by me and directed by Abby. Principal photography for THE CRYPTIDS will take place in October, 2024, outside of New York City with a New York based crew. As part of the Northwestern MFA program, I was awarded a $5,000 production grant from the University. I intend to put the entirety of the grant into The Cryptids. To fully realize our vision and properly compensate high-level talent, both in front of and behind the camera, we need to raise another $5,000 for a total budget of $10,000. About THE CRYPTID TAPES THE CRYPTID TAPES is a mockumentary comedy with the aesthetics of The Blair Witch Project, the comedic sensibility of Parks and Recreation, and the ooey-gooey center of Sesame Street. The famously camera-shy Bigfoot shoots a documentary with the help of her fellow cryptids (Mothman, Dover Demon, and Goatwoman) to reclaim her image and prove she’s not a monster once and for all. When I moved to Maine in 2014 I was overcome by the state’s natural beauty. It felt like being on another planet. It made a lot of sense to me, then, when I learned that Maine was home to the world’s preeminent Cryptozoologist, and, believed to be home to Bigfoot. Later, when I moved to Chicago, I learned of the Windy City’s own Mothman, believed to be the only Cryptid to make appearances in major metropolitan areas. When COVID lockdown started, I couldn’t get these two creatures out of my brain. The experience of being afraid of other people, and specifically the feeling that other people were afraid of me, made me wonder what it would be like to be one of these infamous Cryptids. What if, instead of being monsters, they were just misunderstood? This film is about overcoming the stories that have been told about us and reclaiming our narratives. Our cast of non-human characters explore the deeply human experiences of feeling unwanted, overcoming social anxiety, and finding the beauty that comes from being brave with a group of friends. The Cryptid Tapes is about the desire to be seen by others as we truly are. About Me In June 2024 I graduated from Northwestern University with an MFA in Writing for the Screen and Stage. While there, I directed the proof-of-concept version of Abby Brooke’s half-hour comedy SHROOMERS with a budget of $3,500 and a cast and crew of 20+. As a creator, I write wild and magical dark comedies that center unruly women and girls. Recent works include the horror-comedy play about a bachelorette trip gone wrong, “one dick for life,” and “Hey Girly!: A Multi-Level- Marketing Musical,” which was workshopped at The Annoyance in 2024.
