Our goofy, happy, can’t help but to love her, 5 month old Boxer, Smidge was relinquished to us on an emergency night. She was in extremely rough shape and had been on and off sick for most of her short life. With her nub wagging and that Boxer face staring up at us with big, bulging eyes, we knew we wanted….no. We knew we needed to know what we could do to give her the life she deserved! After many extensive diagnostics, we found that Smidge has a congenital defect called renal dysplasia, meaning both of her kidneys are abnormal and do not function properly. Sadly, a life without functioning kidneys doesn’t last long. Despite so many resources at our fingertips and so many amazing veterinarians working on her and with us, her prognosis is grave. If you’ve ever experienced your lowest point imagine it being two veterinary technicians with so much support that even major surgery was offered to us to save her life, just to find out that it wouldn’t change her outcome. That’s despair. That’s frustration. That’s fall to your knees and cry kind of hurt. Smidge is still wagging her nub through it all, a happy, none the wiser, little girl who lives every moment to the fullest. We can’t explain to her the miles we’d go to give her a long forever. Nor can we explain that no matter how many miles we went, we can’t change or fix it. But we can tell her we love her every day. We can give her the best and happiest rest of her forever, however long or short that may be. We can love her a little more than anything because we know we don’t get as much time to show her how much she means to us. We can support her and her medical needs to the very best of our ability to keep her jumping and running and boxing with us to her heart’s content. We can love her, deeply. We can share her story. We can include her in our lives like she’s one of our own until the day comes that we have to say goodbye. So that is what we will do. We will wipe our tears and smile for her because that’s what Smidge does. She smiles, through it all, until the end. We are putting a medical fund together in Smidge’s honor. This fund goes directly to the critical cases we will always take on and always give our all to. Some of this fund will go to Smidge’s continued care and extensive medical bills but we’d like it to go beyond that. Even $1 helps us on our journey and gives Smidge’s purpose with us an everlasting meaning…giving life to the next. ❤️
