Hi. My name is Jeanne. Jeanne LaBore. And I want to share my love of yoga with our elders and with those who are challenged by cognitive deficits. I have been practicing yoga since 1992, and I’m convinced that we can all live our best lives when we make those brain-body and universal connections that bring us peace, love, and a sense of our place here on Mother Earth, and with all others. For the last 6 years, I have dedicated myself to loving and caring for my 93-year-old mother who is losing her memories, her autonomy, her dignity and her integrity to Vascular dementia and Alzheimer's disease. I have seen the therapeutic benefits of music, dance, movement and mindfulness practices for those of us who suffer from these losses, and I want to bring a therapeutic yoga practice to Senior Centers and Memory Care Units in Minnesota. So I am about to embark on a very rigorous training course to become a certified yoga teacher. This training takes place over the course of 9 months and is designed and provided by the Yoga Sanctuary in Minneapolis. During my study to become a yoga teacher, I expect to give up most of the other activities that I engage in regularly (choir, OLLI classes, etc.) so that I can continue to care for Mom, and so that I can devote myself fully to practice and study. Tuition for the course amounts to $3000. I do not expect to earn an income from teaching yoga that will compensate for either the time or the money I’ll invest in this endeavor. I expect that to a large degree, my work will be pro bono. And besides, at age 73, I’m no longer interested in a full-time career, and I don’t expect to live long enough anyway. If you choose to contribute to the cost of my training, I will be forever grateful, and better yet, even more determined and motivated to do the work and complete this challenging course, because I’m now accountable to all of you who are investing in this plan/project. And, if contributions exceed $3000 for tuition, I promise to use the excess donations to fund music, dance, movement and mindfulness experiences for people who are locked in Memory Care at the Episcopal Homes in Saint Paul.
