All, My name is Jim aka The Barbeardian. This is something I thought I would never have to do. Ask perfect strangers to help me and my family out of an ongoing set of emergencies. But at last, that time has come. So if you can help please but I totally understand the times. So this is our last Hail Mary. I am asking for help to put my beautiful mom to rest and to help the rest of my family get through this. She gave so much when she could and never really had a life without tragedy but she kept going. She really had a mind that it will get better someday but now she will not get to see it in life. I hope that and with my faith knows she will see us get through this. Ma we will see you again!!! TLDR version (well as short as I can make it). May of 2024 I was laid off from a startup I had been with for 13 plus years. The company was sold a couple years before this. Going back and forth to find another job, I am getting the “Sorry we went with” or “You are overqualified and will not stay” messages. Talking with some in the recruiting field that have been trying to help me. It is mostly due to my age (as I am in the weird bracket) and my teeth. Which is most likely the biggest roadblock due to the assumptions that most will have. The last picture is of my teeth/mouth. I know that it might hurt my job search more but maybe there is someone out there that can help us. May of 2024, my mom had a knee replacement surgery almost immediately after coming home. I had to rush her back to the doctor’s office to have her knee checked out. They rewrapped it and sent her home. After 6 weeks, they finally got her a new surgeon due to her original surgeon being out on medical leave. She had to have multiple surgeries to address the infection and her health just got worse and worse. July of 2024, my mom passed away and I know her health issues are directly affected by the infection the doctors didn’t take care of in the beginning. I will never forget her and my heart is broken into pieces. Detailed outline of her struggles with the surgery will be below: All, this has been a long road and we are still nowhere near the end at the moment. My mom went in for a full knee replacement on May 31 of this year. She immediately had complications the day after coming home for the hospital. Knee started bleeding and oozing. She called the doctor, they had her come in the next day. They checked it out, rewrapped it and sent her home. A day or two later, we had to go back and have it rechecked/rewrapped. This got to a point where I was having to rewrap her knee everyday. We went through this for over 6 weeks due to her surgeon being on medical leave. The doctor’s office finally got her in to see another surgeon and he stated right away that there was an infection and would have to do another surgery to replace a spacer and clean out the infection. This took another couple of weeks to get her back in for the surgery. The second surgery was performed on July 13 of this year, with a 5 day stay in the hospital. Once she got home, she was on IV antibiotics for 6 weeks using a PIC line in her arm. She was getting better but the knee still did not look right and was still oozing a brownish liquid. Once she was off the antibiotics, the knee started getting worse again and we went back to the second surgeon. He stated that she would need another surgery, where they were needing to remove and replace everything that was done on the first surgery. On September 26 of this year, she went in for the third surgery. This surgery was to remove/replace everything that was put in at the beginning. She was in the hospital for another 5 or 6 days and came home with another PIC line for IV antibiotics. Everything was going okay until she noticed her arm was swollen, this is the arm the PIC line was in. We were told to go to the ER to have this checked out. So we went, they found that she had a blood clot and put her on blood thinners to address this. They did not remove/replace the PIC line and were told that they didn’t want to take the chance with another one. So after a week or so, she started having a reaction to the blood thinners. She called her primary doctor and he gave her another prescription. So about a week after getting the second blood thinner, she started sleeping a lot and was not herself. She has been having a home healthcare nurse once a week and a phlebotomist once a week to check that we are on the track. I get a frantic call from the Home Healthcare agency on October 25 of this year at around 4:45pm, my mom’s hemoglobin had falling to 5.6, it should be around 12 for women. We were told to call 911 due to her weakness and confusion. By the time she got to the hospital it had falling to 4.4 and still falling. They were work on getting her a blood transfusion but there were complications due to the antibiotics she was taking. So still waiting for a room/bed/transfusion 6 hours later. She was finally moved to a room just after midnight October 26. She gets the okay for the first of what would be multiple transfusions that morning. I came back to the hospital around 9am that same day, she was not herself and still sleeping a lot. She was having issues with confusion, memory loss and time laps issues. She was always asking if she was dead or dying and at some point had issues recognizing my brother and myself. This subsided within a couple of days but she still is a bit confused and her memory is still a bit off. After 6 plus days in the hospital, she came home again. Once we got her home, we went up the stairs to get into the townhouse. I noticed she was having issues using the stairs. I had to help her up the last few stairs, get her the walker and help her into her room. After a couple of days, we noticed her legs were VERY swollen and she was losing the use of them. We talked with the home healthcare agency and they stated to head back to the ER. Mom and I gave it a week or so to see if they would get better on their own but she almost fell using the walker as her legs just gave up and I had to get her back to her bed. I called 911 again and they came out and took her to the hospital again. She had been in the hospital for over a week. This was due to an autoimmune infection attacking her Immune system, killing her white blood cells. This is bringing down her hemoglobin and platelets down to critical levels. Looking this up, I found that this is not good and can lead to major complications. She is still in the hospital at the time of me writing this and we hope she gets to come home soon. Due to the lose of use of her legs and her having to take chemo via IV (they can do this at the office once she is released) it was best to make sure her legs will carry her. So they are working on those 2 items at the moment. The biggest issue is once she is off chemo to see if the autoimmune disorder returns and starts attacking her immune system again. The doctors are not sure yet, so we have to move forward until she is done with chemo. She has another 3 weeks to go with at least 1 more week in the hospital in a rehab center. This has been a very stressful time for us and with me out of money to keep us in our place and fed. It is getting worse for us and I do not know what to do now. For the last 20 years or so, I have been taking care of someone. Started with my Grandmother until she passed and now my Mom for the last 10 plus years. Without help I fear we will end up on the street or worse. I am writing this out to inform everyone what is happening and to keep a record of the issues my Mother has gone through. Maybe there is someone out there that can help point me in a direction. If you got to the end of this post, thank you for reading. This is the HARDEST thing that I have ever had to do. Watch someone that has never needed help get this weak and frail in such a short time. When I was first laid off from my job of 13 plus years I sent out resumes, got interviews but nothing came of them. I also got hurt at this job and never reported it due to not wanting the management to treat me differently. I did tell my manager after I was told it was a new injury but asked him not to report it to upper management. He did report it but I was never told/asked about it from anyone.
