- Devastating floods displaced thousands and destroyed much of an already poor infrastructure in southern Malawi (east Africa) earlier in the year.- A boys Catholic boarding school was greatly impacted by this natural disaster, particularly their sanitation facilities.- The school needs assistance to purchase materials to rebuilt the pit latrines (toilets) at the school.- I am a former Peace Corps Volunteer, with much experience successfully organizing projects like this, and am available to lead this project from January to March 2016 while in the area for medical school coursework. The Fall after graduating from Saint John's University (MN) in 2008 I started three years of service as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the small east African country of Malawi. Making a long story short, while in Malawi I developed many good relationships with people and partnerships with organizations. After finishing up my Peace Corps service at the end of 2011, I was fortunate enought to be accepted into medical school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I will be going back to Malawi early next year to spend two months at a hospital on an clinical rotation. During that time, I plan to also assist Mzimu Woyera (Holy Spirit) Boarding School. This is a late-primary and secondary school for boys, and it is a part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Chikwawa. After the area the school is in was devastated by flooding earlier in this year and the president declared a National Disaster, there has been much need for rebuilding. I’ve developed a good relationship with the school’s headteacher over the last few years. He has asked for my assistance in rebuilding the school's basic sanitation. As we speak, the students have no toilets and they are simply using the surrounding bushes instead.I’m trying to source about 4000 USD that will be used exclusively for direct project costs (eg. materials, skilled construction labor). The school will make a substantial contribution in terms of building materials (sand, quarry stone, bricks) and land. I’m currently working with the headteacher to complete a formal project proposal to be distributed. Feel free to request this formal proposal by sending me an email ([email redacted]). I'm also more than happy to discuss this over the phone or in person if the opportunity presents itself.
