It is with great sadness I announce that, after a four-year battle with ALS, Rev. David K. Louder died on October 20th, 2024 at the age of 56. He was surrounded by "his girls"–his wife, Corlee, and his daughters, Anna and Amanda–as he took his last breath. Dave was diagnosed with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease) in 2019, and the last four years have been devastating to both Dave and his family. Besides the ongoing trauma of his body's decline, Dave's mother, Janice (Stuver) Louder died in February 2024, and his only surviving sibling, Mark Louder, died unexpectedly earlier this year at the age of 58. This family has had enough tragedy in their lives. ALS is a disease that takes everything from you–everything you have to give, and then it takes the rest. Corlee took on the role of Dave's full-time, unpaid caregiver, even as she dealt with her own health issues with her spinal cord. While they had the help of Bayada Home Health Care, with staffing shortages it was impossible to have full 24/7 care. Because of this, his youngest daughter, Amanda, quit her job and became his health aide. ALS doesn't just take everything from the person who has the illness. It takes everything from their families as well. Dave was a brilliant, funny, and compassionate man who loved nothing more than he loved his family. If you would consider helping the Louder family during this very difficult time, it would be much appreciated as they try to navigate what comes next. The family will receive friends at noon, Friday, December 8, 2024 at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, and have a memorial service at 1 pm with Dave's dear friend Rev. Scott Lingenfelter officiating. All are welcome. Per the family's request, please refrain from bringing flowers. Mt. Anna is my coworker who instantly became my friend. Four years into his battle with ALS, Dave is now fighting for his life. I am starting this fundraiser to help the Louder family during this ultimate hardship. Over the course of the last few weeks, Dave has been losing the function of his eyes, which has been his only means of communication. Dave is now on the brink of losing the ability to communicate, which his family has relied entirely upon to make his life as comfortable as possible. The Louder family has always made sure that Dave is in control of his own life, advocating for himself even while "locked" inside of his own body. The father-daughter duo has a passion for storytelling, even writing a documentary together with production beginning back in 2017. When Dave was diagnosed with ALS, he didn't let that get into the way of their creative process. The pair continued production -- writing, filming, researching, editing and promoting -- even as Dave was no longer able to move his body. Anna has become one of my very best friends at work, confiding in me to share her dad's story every step of the way. I have learned about the true devastation that ALS causes for families, especially the Louder family, over the past four years. Please join my effort to help this deserving family of the financial support they need to make it through this difficult time. https://wjactv.com/news/local/my-last-work-windber-man-with-als-produces-documentary-with-daughter https://www.thewindberproject.org/copy-of-berwindland---film---part-i1 https://www.facebook.com/thewindberproject/
