Hi everyone, my name is Samantha Patterson and I am a nursing student at Denver College of Nursing and am heading into my last year of nursing school. I am part of a program through DCN called Global Health Perspectives. Through this program, we volunteer at various organizations each quarter to help those in need get medical attention and advice. As young as I can remember, it has been a goal of mine to travel to a foreign country and help those in need. A few months ago I applied and have been accepted to go to Purulhá, Guatemala this upcoming September to provide healthcare for the community. Purulhá is a rural town that’s located in the central highlands of the country. The residents of Purulhá has been struggling for basic needs for the past 25 years following a 36-year long civil war and the only time this town has access to healthcare is the 3 times each year my school travels there to provide assistance. While in Purulhá, I will be assisting in surgeries, working in the pharmacy, doing physical assessments, providing eyewear, medical education and other necessities. Going on this trip will allow me to advance my education, but most importantly help those who are struggling. I am asking for any help I can to make this trip possible, and am extremely appreciative of everyone's support!
