Have you ever noticed how much people love "true crime" and horrible stories about women getting murdered? This was popular even before Netflix! All the way back in the dark ages, when music was the common form of entertainment and news was brought by wandering bards. Thus, the tradition of ballads, particularly those featuring murder and mayhem was born. My name is Eve Blackwater. Over the course of the pandemic, I began performing these songs and came together with Jeannie Skelly and Kendra MacDevitt to form the NYC-based, folk-noveau band "Brokeneck Girls." We perform historical murder ballads from a female point of view. The true stories behind the songs are often wilder than the songs themselves and inspired me to write Brokeneck Girls, The Murder Ballad Musical. The Murder Ballad Musical is a humorous version of dark, American history, told through traditional American bluegrass, folk and blues songs, as played by Brokeneck Girls. It takes place in a town where the characters of folk songs attempt to live but cannot stop killing each other. The story focuses on three women, who bond over music and start sharing secrets that become more and more outrageous. Eventually, the truth comes out- the desire to survive has driven all of them to become murderers themselves, proving that rage, revenge and violence are not purely masculine characteristics. To my utter amazement- a popular theater group called Frigid NYC loves the play and is producing it this year! We open October 26 at The Kraine Theater! Basic expenses like the theater rental and rehearsal space is covered but we gotta pay the actors and build sets! A month of rehearsals, even for a small cast, adds up to a small fortune! We want to have professionals and pay them what they are are worth- or at least keep them from losing too much money from the shifts they will have to miss. There is already so much buz and excitement about this play! We know it will be a success and become a staple of the downtown theater scene. We just need a little boost at the beginning!
