Piper escaped the yard on Saturday, July 29 and was hit by a car. The driver left Piper in the road, assuming she had died. A neighbor watched the accident happen, and when Piper came to, followed her home. Piper then tried to jump over our fence, but due to her injuries was unable to clear the fence. She sustained a two-inch cut on her chest, requiring six staples. The neighbors who witnessed the accident shared what happened and helped us quickly find an emergency vet. We rushed to Affiliated in Allen Park, where it was confirmed that Piper had a broken leg as well as bruising on her chest from the accident. We are grateful that Piper is still with us, but we have a long road to recovery — including a surgical amputation of her broken leg. It is possible that her leg could be set surgically, but the cost of this operation is too high for our family at this time. We're applying for grants to help with the cost of her care, but are not confident we will receive them in time for her surgery. If you've met Piper, you know she is an incredibly loving and trusting dog. She's high-energy and loves to run. In the evening, she chases the boys up and down our little hallway, barking and having the best time. We hope that with time, she will be able to play once again. Any small amount will help with Piper's vet and care costs.
