This year has been a real roller coaster ride for my baby Cookie. In late February, a dog was found at the front door of the bakery where I work. She had clearly been abandoned, and still I did all I could to possibly find her owner(s) but no one claimed her. So I gladly adopted her. I took her to the vet and it turned out she was heartworm positive. I got her all the necessary treatments, the final two being at the beginning of June, and will know 100% for certain that she’s clear next spring at the 1 yr mark. Unfortunately, another roadblock has presented itself. Cookie has been panting more than usual, and her appetite has slightly decreased. Then I noticed a large amount of discharge was coming from her private area. So I called my vet and they told me to take her to the vet hospital. I did, and it turns out she has what is known as an open pyometra, which is basically an infection that causes the uterus to fill up with pus. It is serious and must be dealt with as soon as possible. It is sadly common in middle age and older dogs that are still intact. The only course of action is surgery. I had planned to get her spayed immediately when I first got her, but the vet was more concerned with the heartworms and said that the worms needed to be addressed before she got spayed. All of this being said, the vet I’ve been going to doesn’t do this procedure at his practice. I’ve been looking at several options, but this operation will cost, on average, anywhere between $3000-$5000. I lost my mom right before this past Christmas, so Cookie has become pretty much my entire world in the 5 months we’ve been together and I cant imagine my life without her in it. Any and all help for this sweet girl would be a true blessing and deeply appreciated by both of us.
