Hello, my name is Xavier and I am raising money to help fund the recovery of my cat Melinda. I will provide a summary of the situation with a more detailed version below. I know it's a lot of information. But if you can, please take the time to read. Summary: My girlfriend and I recently adopted a stray kitten about a month and a half ago. While initially healthy, she has recently taken a turn for the worse and is in critical condition at an emergency clinic. Any funds raised by this campaign will be going to medical bills for her treatment/any potential surgery. If you can provide any assistance, we would be incredibly grateful. If you are unable to help monetarily, please share in hopes of having others see it. Detailed Background: My girlfriend and I had wanted a cat for years. After fully moving in together, we thought it was finally time to get one. In early June, we went to an animal shelter in Miami to adopt. While we were there in the main lobby, a man walked in with a little dark brown cat. He said he found her outside and wanted to bring her in. Unfortunately, the shelter was full and they were unable to take any new adoptions. As a result, they proceeded to take the cat back outside and just leave it there. My girlfriend and I couldn't help ourselves. We were looking for a new cat and this one needed help to get off the street. It felt like this was the cat we were meant to have. We took her in and gave her a loving home. When we took her to our local vet, she was about 3 months old and in near-perfect health. She was the sweetest little thing. I have never owned a cat myself before, but she showed me just how loving they can be. For the past month and a half, we have cared for her and loved her. Unfortunately, things took a bad turn a few days ago. In the middle of the night she vomited two times, and a couple of hours after breakfast the next day she vomited again. We took her to the emergency clinic and they did an x-ray on her. It appeared as though she had ingested a large amount of her kitty litter over time and it had pooled up in her intestinal tract. This was preventing her from keeping her food down. In addition, the litter itself was absorbing water from her, causing her to become dehydrated. Lastly, the x-ray showed a potential obstruction in her smaller intestine that could prevent the litter from being passed easily. The clinic provided her with a little lump of water under her skin layer to help with the dehydration. They said she would most likely get better over the next day and to take her home before bringing her back in the morning for a follow-up. After the x-rays, we took her home again to try and take care of her ourselves. Even with the anti-nausea medication she had taken, she refused to eat or drink. She was getting so weak she couldn't even muster enough energy to meow anymore. She just laid there. We were so worried, we called the clinic again to see if this was normal behavior given the circumstances. They told us to bring her back in right away. Once we got there, they told us that she was in critical condition. She was even more dehydrated, her body temperature was well below the healthy range for a cat, and some of her vitals were dangerously low. We left her in the care of the clinic last night, and I stayed up until 4 in the morning to see if they contacted us with any updates. The picture of her above is from last night when we left her to stay at the clinic. Seeing her like that, I couldn't hold back my tears. And writing this now I find myself crying. The good news is that she has gotten a little better overnight. Her temperature is almost in the normal range and some of her vitals have picked up again. But we were informed that we are still not out of the woods yet. I do have pet insurance through my job. But unfortunately, the way it is implemented her coverage doesn't begin until August 1st and they will not help cover any of these costs. While we are not fully sure what is necessary yet, surgery might need to be taken to fully remove the litter and any other obstructions. The goal I have currently set will cover most of the costs we have spent up to this point. More x-rays are to follow as well the potential for surgery which will only add more to our costs. I don't expect us to fully reach the goal I have set, but any bit will help. I know times are tough now for everyone. And I really have no right to ask you all for help. But this cat has quickly become a member of our family. We love her so much, from the incessant meowing she would do whenever there was food around, to the way she started waking us up in the morning by licking our noses and ears. She is so young, she was abandoned and left alone. She deserves a chance to live a full and happy life where she is loved, and we will do everything in our power to help her get through this. If you can donate something, anything, it would be very much appreciated and I would be forever grateful. If you can't donate that's completely understandable. If that's the case, please share this with friends and family in hopes that we can get more people to see this. I hope to be able to share good news on her condition in the coming days. Until then, here are some pictures of our time together over the last month.
